Islanders shock Revolution in US Open Cup

Two years ago, the Revolution beat the Harrisburg City Islanders in the US Open Cup quarterfinals and went on to win the tournament.
Things didn’t go quite so well this year.
Harrisburg City came from behind to upset New England, 2-1, in overtime last night in a third-round Open Cup match at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn.
Geoff Bloes scored the winning goal, late in the first OT, and Mo Odur also tallied for the Islanders, who will play defending Open Cup champion D.C. United in the quarterfinals July 7.
Harrisburg City is a USL-2 team and the Revolution play in Major League Soccer.
But New England, playing mostly with reserves last night because of a plethora of injuries, was forced to go shorthanded for the final 30 minutes of regulation and both 15-minute OTs after losing Khelli Dube to injury (ankle) in the 63d minute and Michael Videira (thigh) in the 81st.
“There’s nothing you can do,’’ said Revolution coach Steve Nicol, who used all three of his substitutions at halftime.
“It’s nice to get some redemption,’’ Bloes said.
The Revolution got their goal on a free kick by midfielder Jeff Larentowicz in the 38th minute.
The Revolution yesterday acquired an international roster spot from the Wizards for New England’s third-round selection in the 2010 MLS draft.
The Revolution will retain the rights to Kansas City’s international roster spot until Jan. 1, 2011, but no other details of the trade were released.![]()
