Juan Pablo Angel converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 2-1 win over the expansion Philadelphia Union in Harrison, N.J.

Angel’s tiebreaking goal was his third of the season, all in the last two games, and franchise-best 48th of his career. Referee Kevin Stott awarded the penalty kick after Union defender Michael Orozco touched Joel Lindpere’s long pass to Angel with his arm in the box.

The Red Bulls have won four of five after winning just five league games all last season.

The third regular-season match at Red Bull Arena, the club’s new $200 million home, drew 15,619 fans.

After a scoreless first half with not much action, Salou Ibrahim got the Red Bulls (4-1) on the board with an acrobatic goal, his first in the MLS. Jeremy Hall, New York’s No. 1 draft pick last year, got the ball at the right flank and sent it across toward the goal. Ibrahim timed his leap perfectly to get a head on it as goalkeeper Chris Seitz collided with Union defender Jordan Harvey.

Crew 1, Real Salt Lake 0 — Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute and host Columbus went on to victory in a matchup of the past two MLS champions.

Salt Lake upset the Crew in the playoffs last year en route to its first MLS Cup, but went 34 minutes without a shot at one point and didn’t mount an attack until William Hesmer was forced to stop Nelson Gonzalez in the 84th minute. That was followed by a kick save on Robbie Findley’s breakaway four minutes later. Schelotto got his third goal after defender Robbie Russell knocked down Robbie Rogers on the left side of the box.

Fire 2, Dynamo 0 — Midfielders Baggio Husidic and Peter Lowry scored goals and Andrew Dykstra stopped six shots for his second shutout of the season in host Chicago’s victory over Houston.

Chicago (2-2-1) won its second straight game, while Houston (2-2-1) was shut out for the second time in three matches.

Husidic opened the scoring with a minute left in the first half, heading a rebound past Pat Onstad. Lowry made it 2-0 in the 67th minute, directing midfielder Patrick Nyarko’s pass into the net off his chest and past Onstad.

Chivas USA 3, Earthquakes 2 — Justin Braun and Chukwudi Chijindu scored in the second half to give Chivas USA a victory over host San Jose.

Sacha Kljestan also scored for Chivas USA (2-3). Chris Wondolowski and Steven Beitashour scored for the Earthquakes (2-2).

Galaxy 0, Wizards 0 — Host Kansas City shut down Los Angeles’s Edson Buddle for the first time this season in a scoreless tie.

Buddle had seven goals in the first four games for Los Angeles but got off just one shot on goal.
