The Revolution could be sliding to one of their worst records since Steve Nicol took over as coach in 2002. A 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union Saturday night dropped the Revolution to 6-12-3, their highest number of losses since 2004 (8-13-9, 33 points).

With nine games remaining in the regular season, the Revolution have a chance to surpass their 2004 point total, though that likely will not be enough to project them into the playoffs. But all is not lost. The Revolution have a chance to salvage some prestige and also earn bonus money when they host Monarcas Morelia in the SuperLiga final Wednesday.

MLS teams compete in three tournaments outside the league — the Champions League, SuperLiga, and US Open Cup. The Revolution have won the longest-running of these events, the 98-year-old US Open Cup (in 2007), and the most recently created, the 4-year-old SuperLiga (in 2008). They have also qualified for the MLS playoffs 10 times (eight in succession).

The SuperLiga is a made-for-TV event with a short history, but Televisa S.A. makes participation worthwhile by providing a $1 million-plus purse. The finalists share more than $450,000 of that total, according to a league source.

And the Revolution have the best win-loss record in SuperLiga history, an 8-1-4 mark in three tournaments. The Revolution are 7-0-1 against Mexican clubs, including a 1-0 victory over Morelia July 20. But Monarcas were in preseason mode when the SuperLiga started; they now are 3-1-1 (10 points) in the Liga Mexicana de Futbol and will have many reasons to be focusing on Wednesday’s game, since their next league match is not until Sept. 12 against Club America.

The Revolution defeated Morelia while in the midst of an eight-game unbeaten streak. Now, they have a three-game losing streak.

“We know we’ve got to bring it all,’’ Revolution captain Shalrie Joseph said, “especially against a team that’s starting their season — and they’ve been playing well from what I saw. We’ve got to win our next game to just get that momentum and get back our chemistry and start feeling good about ourselves again.

“[Monarcas] got into their season and started playing the better teams in Mexico, so they’re getting their fitness and their sharpness, whereas we’re in the latter part of our season. And they’re going to be ready to play. We’re going to have to pick up our intensity and pick up our play.

“We want to win something, if not the MLS Cup, we want to bring some kind of trophy back to the fans — because they deserve some kind of hardware, especially the way they’ve supported us with the performance we’ve been putting out this year.’’
