The US men’s national team played Canada to a scoreless draw in Toronto Sunday night in its final friendly before Friday’s first CONCACAF qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup. Canadian keeper Lars Hirschfeld stopped Clarence Goodson deep in stoppage time off a point-blank header to deny the Americans victory. The US pushed its unbeaten streak against Canada to 15 (8-0-7) since April 4, 1985. The team posted its fourth shutout in six games, moving to 4-1-1 this year. The US faces Antigua & Barbuda at Tampa in its first Cup qualifier . . . Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez each scored a first-half goal as Mexico beat Brazil, 2-0, in Arlington, Texas, in the Mexicans’ final tuneup before Cup qualifying. Mexico plays Guyana Friday in its CONCACAF opener.

Phillies’ Utley set to rehab in Florida

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, out all season with an injured left knee, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Monday at extended spring training in Clearwater, Fla. The five-time All-Star gave no timetable for a possible return to the Philadelphia lineup . . . The Astros placed first baseman Carlos Lee on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hamstring strain . . . The Rockies placed righthander Juan Nicasio on the 15-day DL because of a strained left knee.

Charles (30 points) lights it up for Sun

Tina Charles had 30 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists to lead the host Connecticut Sun to a 94-86 WNBA victory over the Washington Mystics. Kara Lawson had 18 points for the Sun (4-1) . . . DeWanna Bonner scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the host Phoenix Mercury hold off the Tulsa Shock, 79-72 . . . Cappie Pondexter scored 25 points to lead host the New York Liberty to an 87-72 victory over the Indiana Fever . . . LeRoy Ellis, who played 14 years in the NBA after a standout career at St. John’s, died after a long battle with prostate cancer in Portland, Ore. He was 72.

Knee forces Johnson to call it a career

Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics, four days before the start of the US championships. She has had repeated setbacks with her left knee, seriously damaged in a January 2010 ski accident, and she feared she was putting her long-term health at risk by continuing with her attempts to make a second Olympic team. “It just little by little gets worse and worse,’’ Johnson said. “My body is to the point where I need time to rest and retire so I can be healthy for the rest of my life.’’

Jaguars’ pick Blackmon arrested on DUI

Jaguars first-round draft pick receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested on a driving under the influence charge Sunday after authorities in Oklahoma said he had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. The former Oklahoma State star smelled of alcohol when an officer pulled him over shortly after 3 a.m., Stillwater police spokesman Captain Randy Dickerson said. Blackmon agreed to take a Breathalyzer test and blew a .24 - three times the legal limit, Dickerson said. The Jaguars selected Blackmon with the fifth pick in April’s draft.

Woods’s agent fails Breathalyzer test

Tiger Woods’s agent, Mark Steinberg, was arrested on drunken driving charges in suburban New York. Police say Steinberg was stopped during a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night in Ardsley and arrested on driving while intoxicated charges. Sgt. David Fisher said Steinberg, who told authorities who he was, was arrested after he was issued a field sobriety test. Police say his blood alcohol content on a Breathalyzer was .18 percent. Woods said he spoke to Steinberg before Sunday’s final round at the Memorial, which Woods won . . . Michael Phelps erased the pool record that was also his first world record with a finish of 1 minute 54.79 seconds in the 200-meter butterfly final at the Austin (Texas) Elite meet. The 14-time Olympic gold medalist led the entire way, touching the wall ahead of China’s Wu Peng (1:56.71). Phelps set the old record of 1:54.92 as a 15-year-old in 2001, qualifying for that year’s FINA World Aquatics Championship . . . Dartmouth repeated as national rugby champion, beating Arizona, 24-5, in Chester, Pa., at the USA Sevens Collegiate Championship . . . Alabama beat top-seeded California, 5-2, and Oklahoma edged Arizona State, 5-3, in Oklahoma City to reach the Women’s College World Series softball finals.
