SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I.—A junior at the University of Rhode Island is keeping her eye on the ball -- quite literally.
Nursing major Krista McCann made her debut as a professional soccer referee last month when she officiated a game between the Boston Breakers and the Western New York Flash in the country's top women's league. She was one of two assistant referees.
She says she was nervous and got some grief from the fans, but thinks the referee crew did a great job.
McCann officiates high school girls soccer in Rhode Island and is now refereeing the U.S.A. Men's Amateur League in the state. Her goal is to serve as a referee for soccer's world governing body, FIFA (FI'-fuh).
McCann graduated from Cumberland High School in 2009.![]()
