Galaxy put on quite a show
David Beckham and Robbie Keane each scored twice as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Timbers, 5-3, in Portland on Saturday night.
Portland scored first went ahead three minutes into the game when Kris Boyd connected off Kalif Alhassan’s drilled corner kick. But the lead lasted only 16 minutes before Beckham tied the game with his fourth of the year in the 20th minute, on a curving shot from 30 yards out.
Beckham scored again three minutes later with a trademark free kick before a Landon Donovan penalty shot and a Keane tap-in put Galaxy up, 4-1, at the 28-minute mark.
Earthquakes 5, Real Salt Lake 0 — Chris Wondolowski scored a hat trick as San Jose widened its lead atop the Western Conference with a victory in Santa Clara, Calif.
Wondolowski scored in the 19th, 72d, and 80th minutes to extend his league-leading goal total to 17 on the year.
Alan Gordon tapped home a loose rebound from 3 yards in the 63d minute and Simon Dawkins scored at short range off a 79th-minute corner kick to complete the scoring for San Jose, which is 4 points clear of Real Salt Lake in the standings.
The five-goal difference tied the Earthquakes’ largest margin of victory, matching a 5-0 win against Dallas on April 22, 2000.
Sporting KC 2, Crew 0 — Jacob Peterson and Teal Bunbury scored as Sporting Kansas City won in Columbus, Ohio, to grab sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.
Kansas City (11-5-3) took the lead in the sixth minute when Peterson Joseph split the defense with a pass to Peterson, who beat goalie Andy Gruenebaum for the 1-0 lead.
Union 2, Impact 1 — Carlos Valdes’s goal in the 91st minute lifted Philadelphia past Montreal at Chester, Pa. Lionard Pajoy also scored for the Union, who won their third in a row and fourth in five games.
The Impact registered an own goal in the 90th minute after a corner kick by Patrice Bernier eluded Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath.
FC Dallas 2, Rapids 1 — Fabian Castillo scored in the 81st minute and FC Dallas ended a 13-game winless streak with a win in Commerce City, Colo.
Castillo assisted on the tying goal by Carlos Rodriguez in the 60th minute and Rodriguez also had an assist for FC Dallas.
FC Dallas had not won since beating Montreal April 14. The team was 0-7-6 since.
Fire 1, Whitecaps 0 — Midfielder Pavel Pardo scored on an early free kick and Chicago snapped a 221-minute scoreless streak in a victory over Vancouver in Bridgeview, Ill.
The Fire prevailed despite playing a man short for the final 21 minutes after defender Arne Friedrich was ejected with a second yellow card.
