FINAL: Steve Ralston and Wells Thompson scored second-half goals to give surging New England its third victory in a row, this time 2-1 over the San Jose Earthquakes. Thompson's hard-driving, left-footed shot was his first MLS goal since May 6, 2007. The game-changer may have been several second-half moves by coach Steve Nicol, particularly the addition of speedy Sainey Nyassi and the move of steady -- and dominant -- Shalrie Joseph from midfield to the forward line in the 62d minute. Joseph's assist on the Ralston goal was his eighth of the year. The victory gives the Revolution a 9-6-6 record and 33 points in its drive for the playoffs. The Earthquakes fall to 5-12-5 and extended a season-long winless streak on the road (0-8-2).

The Revolution plays next on Saturday against the Kansas City Wizards, also at Gillette Stadium.

Here are more Revolution notes from colleague Frank Dell'Apa: Kenny Mansally and Sainey Nyassi have received invitations to join the Gambian national team for exhibitions against Belgium and Oman in Europe in early September. ... Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner will attend a memorial service for former England national team coach Bobby Robson in Durham, England, Sept. 21. Mariner played for Robson at Ipswich Town when the team won the FA Cup in 1978 and won the UEFA Cup in 1981. ... San Jose central defender Andre Luiz has made 21 appearances for Brazil's national team. He started his career with Sao Paulo FC and joined the 'Quakes July 31 after performing with Chiapas in Mexico last season.

MINUTE 92: Terrific cross by Corrales to Ramon Sanchez, whose header goes upper left in the net, past a diving Matt Reis. New England 2, San Jose 1.

MINUTE 90: Alvarez takes a shot, wide right. Two minutes of extra time called.

MINUTE 86: Shalrie Joseph's little tip, wide left but the best of his situation. Joseph has been terrific since he was shifted to the forward line in the 62d minute. That may have been coach Steve Nicol's key move of the match.

MINUTE 82: Phelan launches one, wide right. The Revolution has been running roughshod the last 15 minutes. Attendance announced: 7,286. The fans in the Fort have been making enough noise for the empty seats.

MINUTE 76: Salinas out, Quincy Amarikwa in for San Jose.

MINUTE 75: Thompson yellow-carded with a hard tackle to Corrales.

MINUTE 74: GOAL! Wells Thompson, taking an early pass from Ralston. He charged past defender Ramiro Corrales, uncorked a left-footer from the edge of the box, gets the net on the right side. New England 2, San Jose 0. Ralston gets the assist.

MINUTE 71: Larentowicz left footer, just wide left.

MINUTE 68: GOALl! Joseph wins a header, Ralston gets the open ball, chips the ball over the keeper. It's New England 1, San Jose 0. It's Ralston's seventh goal, leading the team. Joseph gets a well-deserved assist, his eighth of the season.

MINUTE 66: Huckerbee out, Ryan Johnson in. Johnson, a Melrose High product and Dorchester native,

MINUTE 65: The field is playing like concrete, with balls skipping off, skimming, and rolling.

MINUTE 62: Dube out, Pat Phelan in for him.

MINUTE 60: Ralston to Heaps with a header, but he doesn't get a clear shot off Brandon McDonald. Bright side: Heaps won the header.

MINUTE 57: Sainey Nyassi is on right, replacing Mauricio Castro.

MINUTE 54: Quick note: If you're watching on TV38, this whole blog is a big spoiler alert tonight. Because of Teddy Kennedy funeral-burial coverage, this is on tape-delay on TV. In real time, Joseph just got a jewel of a shot off, deflected far right.

MINUTE 51: Joseph has enough spring in his step to leap for a header. Gets a shot off, but Quakes keeper Joe Cannon makes the play.

MINUTE 49: Second-half underway. Shalrie Joseph goes down after a sliding tackle by Ramiro Sanchez, who gets yellow-carded. Joseph is limping after the play.

HALFTIME:It's scoreless at Gillette. Desultory play in the first half, but with crummy weather to start and slippery field conditions. Arturo Alvarez has been the big player for the Quakes so far. The Revolution has gotten a nice pass plays but not been able to press their advantage with physical play on left back Ramiro Corrales.

MINUTE 40:Nice cross by Alvarez, so-so header by Chris Wondolowski. Reis handles easily.

MINUTE 34: Alvarez threaded through the defense and got off a solid left kick, which Reis stopped, coughed up, and snuffed.

MINUTE 29: Beautiful left cross by Mauricio Castro, just ahead of Steve Ralston. On a better night, with a drier surface, Ralston would have been able to net it.

MINUTE 26: Ramiro Corrales, playing left back in place of an injured Bobby Convey, almost gave a gift to the Revolution, with a pass back to the keeper that ran out of gas and was nearly picked up by the Revolution.

MINUTE 24: Arturo Alvarez is consistently beating the Revolution defense, and nearly managed to hold on to it after belated work by two defenders.

MINUTE 21: Castro put on ball-handling show, and Wells Thompson slammed a low shot at the keeper. Perhaps with such a messy night, low rockets may be coming, with offenses hoping for the unpredictable bounce.

MINUTE 18:It's a messy night, with the field super-slick and the ball taking uncharacteristically healthy bounces. San Jose looks like a one-man band, with Alvarez displaying terrific ball-handling skills.

MINUTE 12: Biggest Quakes threat so far -- Reis stuck out of position, and Alvarez running roughshod -- stopped near the goal line by a kick from Jay Heaps.

MINUTE 11: Revs' threat -- a through ball to the dangerous Dube -- stopped with a ref's whistle. Offsides. There will be other opportunities.

MINUTE 4 Barely underway and we have our first yellow card. Quakes midfielder Ramiro Corrales

PREGAME: The die-hards are here tonight. Temperatures in the 50s and a steady drizzle greet the New England Revolution as they take on the San Jose Earthquakes.

Kheli Dube, who scored a hat trick last game and two goals in the past two San Jose games, is in the starting lineup for the Revolution. So is midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, who is wearing a cast after a wrist fracture last Saturday against Real Salt Lake.

Before the game, the stadium held a moment of silence for Teddy Kennedy, the Massachusetts legend whose funeral was earlier in the day in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood.

Back at game time.
