Midfielder Donnie Smith and goalkeeper Luis Soffner are the latest 2013 draft picks to sign with the New England Revolution. Smith played in six preseason games with the Revolution with one assist in a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Feb. 16. As a 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-America at UNC-Charlotte, Smith scored four goals and added four assists in 16 starts of his senior season. Soffner played in the Revolution’s 4-1 preseason victory over Phoenix FC. A four-year starter at Indiana University, Soffner was named NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2012. He started in 83 of 84 games with a GAA of 0.72 his senior year. He left IU with 32 shutouts and 262 saves. “Both players did well during preseason training and we’re looking forward to seeing them develop in our system,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said. Smith and Soffner were selected in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft in January.

Revolution signs forward Chad Barrett, defender Bilal Duckett

Posted by Staff February 11, 2013 01:24 PM

The New England Revolution, who are looking to improve from last season's 9-17-8 campaign that landed them ninth in the Eastern Conference, announced Monday the signing of forward Chad Barrett and defender Bilal Duckett.

Barrett, 27, has scored 42 goals and added 27 assists in 192 career appearances with Chicago (2005-08), Toronto (2008-2010) and Los Angeles (2011-12).

Most recently, he was on loan from the Galaxy to Valerenga of Norway’s Tippeligaen where he made five appearances and recorded one assist through the end of their 2012 season.

“Having faced Chad many times, we’re very aware of the type of competitor he is and the determination he brings to the field, and we’re looking for him to bring that to the field for the Revs now," Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said.

Duckett, 24, spent the 2012 season with the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL PRO and made 19 appearances as the team advanced to the USL PRO playoffs.

Prior to signing with Harrisburg, Duckett played one season with Vancouver Whitecaps FC after the Whitecaps drafted him in the third round (37th overall) of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. He made four appearances, including two starts, as a rookie with Vancouver.

"With Bilal, we’re bringing in a tall, physical defender who gives us depth and versatility along the backline," Burns said. "Having him in camp last fall and this preseason has helped his assimilation into our system.”

Both players will travel with the team to Tucson today for the next stage of preseason training. Further details of the signings will not be released.
