Revolution signs two draft picks
Midfielder Donnie Smith and goalkeeper Luis Soffner are the latest 2013 draft picks to sign with the New England Revolution.
Smith played in six preseason games with the Revolution with one assist in a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Feb. 16. As a 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-America at UNC-Charlotte, Smith scored four goals and added four assists in 16 starts of his senior season.
Soffner played in the Revolution’s 4-1 preseason victory over Phoenix FC. A four-year starter at Indiana University, Soffner was named NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2012. He started in 83 of 84 games with a GAA of 0.72 his senior year. He left IU with 32 shutouts and 262 saves.
“Both players did well during preseason training and we’re looking forward to seeing them develop in our system,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said.
Smith and Soffner were selected in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft in January.
