BOSTON- The Revolution will retain significant parts of their defensive depth in 2014.

The club has re-signed defenders Kevin Alston, Darrius Barnes and goalkeeper Luis Soffner.

Both Alston and Barnes were out of contract heading into the new year, so new contracts have been signed. Soffner had his contract option declined in November and had offers to go elsewhere, but was ultimately able to find a path back to the Revolution. Specific terms of the deals weren't released.

Alston and Barnes, 25 and 27, respectfully, were mostly bench players last year after entering the league in 2008 as regular starters. The duo played in 15 cumulative games last year, mostly filling in when regular starters were injured or suspended.

Alston was unavailable for most of last year, too, due to contracting a rare form of leukemia. But Alston battled back the disease and took to the playing field on July 27 in a 2-1 win over DC United after being out for four months. He was later honored as the league's Comeback Player of the Year.

"Both Kevin and Darrius have been valuable members of this Club for the past five seasons and are reliable, proven veterans," said General Manager Mike Burns in a statement. "They are both professional in the way they conduct themselves both on and off the field."

Soffner is still untested as a league goalkeeper as he enters his second professional season. He is the third goalkeeper on the club's roster. He is also an assistant coach at Brandeis University.
