Athletes of the Year

Hayley Braun

Division 1: Marblehead, Junior
Braun finished fourth in the slalom and 13th in the giant slalom to help Marblehead win its second consecutive state championship. The honors student also competed for Team Massachusetts at the Eastern High School championships for the second consecutive year.

Isaac Hoenig

Division 1: Lincoln-Sudbury, Nordic
A repeat All-Scholastic selection, Hoenig was the state nordic champion, completing the course in 22:38. He was second overall at the Eastern High School championships and first in the EHS Mass Start Classic race. The senior will be attending Williams College.

Mark McKenna

Division 1: Wellesley, Senior, Alpine
The four-time honor roll student and National Honor Society member placed sixth at States in the giant slalom and was a key contributor to Wellesley's second straight state championship. In Mass Bay Ski League competition, McKenna was third overall in alpine and seventh in nordic.

Corey Stock

Division 1: Lincoln-Sudbury, Sophomore
Stock followed up her first-place state championship run with wins in all four races at Junior Nationals. The sophomore, a 0repeat all-scholastic, also placed first at Junior Nationals as a freshman. She also is a two-time cross-country all-scholastic.

All-Scholastics

Devon Belding

Masconomet, Senior
Belding was the top slalom/giant slalom combined skier at the Interscholastic race, winning in 53.60. She was third in the North Shore Ski League and placed 12th in slalom at states. The senior is deciding between New Hampshire and Stonehill.

Amelia Brown

Notre Dame (Hingham), Freshman
Brown placed seventh in the slalom at states, finishing in 50.13. The honor roll student also qualified for the Junior Olympics and was the Ski East Girls individual champion. She is a varsity athlete in lacrosse and soccer as well.

Maxwell Brown

Middlesex, Junior
Despite being a cross-country captain, surfer, and crew member, Brown still found the time to win the ISL's MVP on the slopes. The honor student finished third in the NEPSAC giant slalom, a career best after finishing fifth in the 2009 event.

Amy Chappel

Milton Academy
It didn't take long for Chappel to climb to the top of the ISl. After finishing ninth in her freshman year she took the top spot this winter. She also competes for the MWV Ski team and plays field hockey, softball and tennis.

Matt Cummings

Andover, Sophomore, Alpine
Cummings won the interscholastic race and took second at the North Shore Ski League championship. He finished fifth at the state championship in the slalom. The honor roll student is planning to train in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, over the summer.

Kris Engen

Wellesley, Junior, Alpine
Engen finished first in the Mass Bay Ski League East and second in the slalom at the state championships at Wachusett. He was named the MVP of the state champion Raiders. When he isn't skiing, the honor roll student plays soccer and enjoys fishing.

Eli Hoenig

Lincoln-Sudbury, Freshman, Nordic
Hoenig finished second in the sprint and fourth in the 5k classic at Junior Nationals and was a member of the winning relay team. He was third in nordic at states. He runs cross-country in the fall and is a Dual County League all-star.

Simon Merryweather

Hingham, Sophomore, Alpine
The Ski East regular-season individual champion, Merryweather placed ninth in the giant slalom at states and 11th in the slalom. The high honor roll student qualified for the Eastern High School championships and the J2 Eastern championships.

Olivia Meyerson

Concord-Carlisle, Sophomore
Meyerson finished the course in 26 minutes flat at the state championship to place fourth. She was second in the Mass Bay West League and eighth overall at J2 New Englands. She runs cross-country and outdoor track in addition to skiing.

Tom Rummel

Dover-Sherborn, Junior, Nordic
Rummel was the state nordic runner-up with a time of 23:17. He was the top skier in the Mass Bay East Ski League and is a two-time Dover-Sherborn MVP. A prolific athlete, Rummel boxes, runs track, and plays lacrosse, golf, and tennis.

Danielle Scanlon

Waltham, Senior
The back-to-back state giant slalom champion also finished second in the Mass Bay Ski League East and qualified for team Massachusetts at the Eastern High School championship for the fourth consecutive year. Scanlon will ski at the University of Michigan.

Nick Sherman

Andover, Junior, Alpine
Sherman won the North Shore Ski League alpine championship and placed second at the All-Scholastic and States. He was selected to race in the Eastern High School championship. The junior is also an avid lacrosse player.

Hannah Smith

Wellesley, Junior
Smith finished second at the state championships winning the Mass Ski League East regular-season crown. The high honors student is Junior Olympic competitor for Team New England and a member of the Cambridge Sports Union Junior Nordic Division.

Michelle Solomon

Concord-Carlisle, Junior
The junior finished fourth in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom at states. The high honors student won the Mass Bay West Omega for the third consecutive year, and was first in the conference all-star race. She also plays soccer and runs track.

Christopher Stock

Lincoln-Sudbury, Nordic
Stock was undefeated in Mass Bay West competition this season. The two-time Eastern High School overall boys' champion qualified for his third New England Junior Olympic team spot this year. He is a national merit finalist and will ski cross-country for Harvard next year.

Maika Strogoff

Marblehead, Junior
Strogoff placed sixth in the slalom at the state championships after finishing second for the Headers and fifth overall in the Mass Bay Ski League East. When she's not on the slopes, the honor roll student plays varsity lacrosse and field hockey.

David Villari

Wayland, Junior
Villari was third in Mass Bay West and was named Skimiester for highest combined nordic and alpine scores. He finished seventh in the slalom and 11th in the giant slalom at states. The honors student plays soccer in the fall and runs track in the spring.

Tom Busta

Andover
Under Busta's tutelage this year's pack of Golden Warriors compiled an 8-2 record in the North Shore Ski League, won the Interscholastic race and were State finalists. The 25-year coaching veteran has been at Andover for 11 years.

Matt Dawson

Marblehead
In his first year, Dawson led the Headers to a 10-0 record in Mass Bay East competition in the regular season before repeating as state champion. The St. Lawrence University graduate enjoys running, skiing, and playing ultimate Frisbee.

Pat Garrison

Acton-Boxborough
Garrison and the Colonial girls took home second place in Mass Bay West and fourth at the state meet. Also coach of the boys' team, Garrison just completed her 12th season at the helm. She credited the team's camaraderie for its success.

Graham Taylor

Lincoln-Sudbury
Taylor's state cross-country champions placed three skiers in the top five in the championships. Taylor began his coaching career more than 50 years ago at Harvard, which he also attended. Outside of coaching, he enjoys singing with the Concord chorus.
