Athletes of the Year

Derek Golner

Division 3: Tyngsborough, 160
Golner cemented his legacy by winning his fourth Division 3 state title, a feat matched by only a handful of wrestlers in Massachusetts history. The North Carolina Greensboro-bound senior also won the New England championship and his second All-State title in 2010.

Jordan Michelson

Division 1: Needham, Senior, 140
After finishing fourth at the Division 1 state finals and All-States last year, the senior found redemption in 2010, winning titles at Division 2, the All-States, and the New England Championships at 140 pounds. An honor roll student, Michelson went 50-0 in 2010, giving him 133 career wins.

Alex Najjar

Division 1: Shawsheen, Senior, 189
Najjar won two Division 1 state titles at 189 pounds and finished his career with a 51-0 record in 2010. In addition to winning at the New England Championships this year, the honor roll student defeated Nate Collins of Springfield for the Division 1 title and the All-State crown.

Isaiah Williams

Division 1: Haverhill, Senior, 171
Williams finished 49-0 this season and defended his titles at the Division 1 States, All-State, and New England Championships at 171 pounds. Williams, a two-time Wrestler of the Year, is riding a two-year, 102-match win streak and graduates with a 144-18 career record.

All-Scholastics

Kevin Barrucci

Burlington, Senior, 145
Barrucci was an All-State finalist for the third time in 2010 and a New England Championship finalist for the second time, falling to Dan Telhada in each final. Barrucci won the Division 2 state title at 145 pounds, and closes out his career with a 191-31 record.

Nathan Calandra

Lexington Christian, Senior, 125
Calandra's 32-3 record pushed his career mark to 116-21. He has finished first in his weight class in the EIL for five years in a row and the New England Invitational twice, including this year. This season the four-time honor roll student finished fourth at New Englands.

Andrew Companeschi

Shawsheen, Senior, 215
Companeschi capped a 51-4 season with a sectional championship and an All-State title at 215 pounds. The senior also was a Lowell Holiday tournament finalist and placed fourth at the New England Championships. He also was a Commonwealth Athletic Conference All-Star in football in 2009.

Duncan Crystal

Phillips Andover, Senior, 135
Competing at 135 pounds, the Andover senior won the Class A title and was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. He also won the New England title and placed seventh at the Prep Nationals to earn All-American status. He will attend Johns Hopkins.

Matt Dehney

Dracut, Senior, 152
Dehney won the Division 2 state title at 152 pounds as well as the Lowell Holiday tournament title. The senior lost in the All-State final to Tyngsboro's Matt Donohoe but got payback in New England finals. The honor roll student sports a 160-30 career record.

Matt Donohoe

Tyngsborough, Senior, 152
Donohoe won his second Division 3 state title at 152 pounds, as well as the All-State crown. The senior defeated Dracut's Matt Dehney in the state finals, before Dehney exacted his revenge in the New England finals. Donohoe shared Tynsborough MVP honors with Derek Golner.

Nick Flannery

Framingham, 130
Flannery ran the title table in 2010, winning in the Division 1 sectional, state, All-State, and New England Championships. Owner of a 45-2 record this year (153-23 career), Flannery won 14 career championships. A repeat All-Scholastic, Flannery will attend Cleveland State in the fall.

Terrance Jean-Jacques

Haverhill, Junior, 285
Jean-Jacques had an outstanding junior year, finishing 51-0 and claiming titles at the Division 1 States, All-States and New England Championships. The 285-pound champion has a career record of 105-12 and advanced to the top 12 at the Prep Nationals.

Corey Melo

New Bedford, Senior, 119
Melo won the Division 1 State title and the All-State title at 119, defeating Hugo Dominguez of Lawrence in each final. Melo also was a finalist at the New England Championships and made the Whalers a force to be reckoned with in the Division 1 South finals.

Mike Mui

Hingham, Sophomore, 103
Just a sophomore, Mui went 38-1 and won the Division 3 South, Division 3 states, and All-State titles at 103 pounds. In his freshman year he had top-five finishes at South sectional and the Division 3 state meet.

Derek Papagianopoulos

BB&N, Senior, 285
A football standout and BB&N Student President, Papagianopoulos finished with a 193-18 record over four years. He is a four-time prep state finalist and three-time champion. Papagianopoulos has also been a two-time New England champion and three-time Prep National All-American, finishing fourth this year at 285 pounds.

Sam Shames

Newton North, 112
Shames earned his 150th career win in the New England Championships, capping a 50-1 season that included Division 1 sectional and state titles. Shames also added his second All-State title at 112. The senior is a three-time New England place winner.

Jake Sherman

Burlington, 125
The UMass-bound senior, like his twin Matt, won the Division 2 championship and All-State title for Burlington. Wrestling at 125, Jake also won the Lowell Holiday title and was a finalist at the New England Championships. The honor roll student has a 169-27 career record.

Matt Sherman

Burlington, 135
The Middlesex League Wrestler of the Year sported a 54-5 record, winning sectional, state, All-State, and New England titles at 135 pounds. Sherman won three state titles, graduating with a 171-28 career record. The senior, and brother of All-Scholastic Jake, also is an honor roll student.

Daniel Telhada

Franklin, Senior, 145
Telhada nailed the trifecta of titles in 2010, winning titles at 145 pounds in Division 1, All-State, and the New England Championships. The senior was a three-time Hockomock League champ and boasted a 45-2 record this year. Led by Telhada, Franklin won the Division 1 state title.

North Andover
Castricone led North Andover to a 28-3-1 mark and the Division 2 state title in 2010, adding more wins to an already legendary resume. The Massachusetts and New England Wrestling Hall of Fame member has coached his alma mater for 36 years, earning a New England-record 651 wins.

Sean Chase

Wayland
In his third year, Chase led the Tigers to the Division 3 state and Central titles as well as a share of the Dual County League crown. The Wayland alum was named the 2008-09 Division 3 Central coach of the year and has a 67-12-2 career mark.

Mark Donovan

Shawsheen
Shawsheen capped a 21-0 season with Division 1 North and Commonwealth Athletic Conference titles, led by All-Scholastics Alex Najjar and Andrew Companeschi. Donovan has a career record of 331-104 and is a member of the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame.
