Athletes of the Year

Luke Westman

Division 1: Newton North, Senior, S/OH
Westman has been nominated to the Bay State All-Stat Team in basketball, soccer, and volleyball. The outside hitter dished his 2,000th career assist this season, 495 assists and 245 kills. He will play basketball for Colby College.

All-Scholastics

Aris Bega

North Quincy
The Patriot League MVP and three-time league All-Star notched 382 kills this season for 1,022 kills in his career. The outside hitter also plays volleyball, football, and basketball. The senior received high honors and will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Drew Caruso

Haverhill, Senior, MH
The senior middle hitter notched 214 kills, 96 digs. and 26 aces to be named to the All-Conference team for a third consecutive year. The two-time captain plays for the Nor'east Minutemen and has been in the Bay State Games. Caruso will study at Lasell College.

Kevin Farley

Needham
The two-time Bay State League All-Star led his team to the South semifinals, ending his season with 370 kills. The two-time team MVP was also named an All-Star in basketball and will attend Wake Forest University.

Jian Yi Huang

Latin Academy
The junior outside hitter steered the Dragons (16-5) to the North sectional quarterfinals. The honor roll student also plays club volleyball for the Knights. Huang has volleyball in his sights for his collegiate career as he heads into his final year at Latin.

Ryan Kennedy

Barnstable, Senior
The two-time South Alliance All-Star had 317 kills this season and 112 digs. The 2011 South Alliance Player of the Year led the Red Raiders (13-6) to the South sectional quarterfinals. The senior enjoys surfing and graphic design.

Brian Keogh

St. John's Prep
The captain reached 362 kills to be named the MVP after making it to the North sectional semifinals. The junior outside hitter collected a 3.2 GPA and captains the soccer team. Keogh has also played for the Nor'East Minutemen.

Joseph Kuykendall

Andover, Senior, Setter/OH
The three-time team MVP and Merrimack All-Conference outside hitter has captained the Golden Warriors for three years, ending his career with an appearance in the North sectional. Kuykednall will attend James Madison University as a broadcast journalism major.

Jordan Lee

Newton South
The senior captained the Lions to the South sectional finals, earning 545 assists and 125 digs this season. The Dual County League First-Team All-Star plays for the Boston Knights and competes in soccer and basketball. Lee will study at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Kevin Lovaincy

Cambridge, Senior, RS
Lovaincy unleashed 255 kills, 153 digs, and 89 solo blocks for a state championship. The two-time Dual County League All-Star captains the Falcons basketball and football teams, and has earned himself a full ride to Saint Anselm.

LJ Penella

Xaverian, Senior, OH
The Western Alliance All-Star handed out 238 kills this season. The Central sectional semifinalist is a National Honors and Spanish Honors society member and has committed to Bentley University. The senior enjoys playing golf and reading.

Jalen Penrose

Cambridge, Junior, OH/MH
The Dual County Player of the Year led the state with 499 kills this season and a .400 hitting percentage for a state championship. The two-time league All-Star plays basketball and enjoys media journalism.

Joel Rodriguez

Lawrence, Senior
The senior middle blocker led the Lancers this season with 266 kills and 125 blocks and into the North sectional quarterfinal. Rodriguez was also designated the Lancers MVP. Rodriguez plans to play football at UMass-Dartmouth.

William Shimkus

Lincoln-Sudbury
The Dual County League MVP led the Warriors to a spot in the Central finals after grabbing a state title last year for the Warriors. Shimkus, a senior setter, is a two-time league All-Star and will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Zachary Sindoni

Haverhill
The setter notched his 1000th career assist this season and added 184 digs to make All-Conference for a second consecutive year. The North sectional semifinalist has participated in the junior Olympics and the Bay State Games.

Michael Thorpe

Newton North, Senior
The Bay State MVP totaled 1,500 kills in his career after a 350-kill season that brought the Tigers to the state semifinals. The senior outside hitter, who also tallied 201 assists, will play basketball at Emerson College.

Kelley Leary

Cambridge
The Cambridge alum piloted the Falcons (22-3) to a state championship after clinching the North sectional title. "This year's team fought hard to earn [the title]," she said. Leary's son, Jalen Penrose, is an All-Scholastic.
