Attleboro should be competitive in both the Hockomock League and with its non-league schedule. How well they do will depend on staying healthy and, more importantly, how quickly they can develop depth at the defensive back and line positions. Defense was a concern last year when Attleboro gave up a league high 23.3 ppg.

Franklin

  • Last year's record: 6-5
  • Strength: Team speed.
  • Concerns: Size; depth at line positions.

    • Joe Seaver, OL/DL, Senior, 5-9, 210
    • Brett Weaver, RB/DB, Senior, 5-7, 160

Inexperience proved costly last season as Franklin finished last in the Hockomock Kelly-Rex Division. This season the Panthers return nine starters, including leading scorer Rhett Davis. Coach Brad Sidwell has proven that he knows how to win, and with some experienced players under his guidance, there is no reason the Panthers cannot contend for the division title.

King Philip

  • Last year's record: 8-2
  • Strength: Tailback.
  • Concerns: Inexperience.
  • Coach: Brian Lee (7th season, career record: 33-31)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games

It will be an uphill battle for King Philip all season. Nearly their entire roster last season was made up of seniors. "Even our backups last season were seniors," said coach Brian Lee. "Everything is real new to these guys." The Warriors only welcome back two starters from last season, senior co-captains Nick Lussier (linebacker) and Jason Litchfield (guard). Most of their other positions are wide open for whoever works hard enough to earn a starting spot, but expect to see juniors Sam McDonald and Joey Cochrane lining up at wideout. Senior tailback Charles Ruffin did not start last year, but saw some touches down the stretch and got plenty of game experience. He will shoulder most of the workload on the ground.

Mansfield

  • Last year's record: 12-1
  • Strength: Offensive skill; defensive strength and speed.
  • Concerns: Overall size.
  • Coach: Mike Redding (24th season, Career record: 187-59-4)
  • Playing surface: Artificial turf
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 11 lettermen
    • George Busharis, QB/DB, Senior, 6-3, 185
    • Nick Chiocco, TE/DE, Senior, 6-2, 230
    • Brent Doherty, TE/DE, Senior, 6-2, 190
    • Greg Donahue, RB/DB, Senior, 5-8, 165
    • Mike Farrell, RB/LB, Senior, 5-11, 195
    • Dylan Finerty, RB/DB, Senior, 6-0, 195
    • Dan Gilmore, RB/DB, Senior, 5-10, 170
    • Craig Mallett, QB/DB, Senior, 6-0, 165
    • Zach Schafer, OG/DE, Senior, 6-1, 195
    • Tim Shield, QB/DE, Junior, 6-2, 190
    • Blayne Taylor, RB/DB, Senior, 5-8, 160

After losing their first game last season to Aquinas Institute at Rochester, N.Y., the Hornets went undefeated the rest of the way to capture the Division 2 Super Bowl, beating Reading at Gillette. Despite losing 23 players to graduation, including last season's player of the year, running back Jamel Marshall, the defending champions show no signs of slowing down in 2011. "We've got some skill kids back," said coach Mike Redding. "We have a lot back on offense, but more shoes to fill on defense." The defense will be anchored by an experienced and deep linebacking corps, and will benefit from the return of last season's leading tackler, defensive end Zach Schafer. With the loss of Marshall and a backfield-by-committee type of approach, Mansfield will rely on senior quarterback George Busharis to move the chains through the air. Redding is confident that he has at least two or three good receivers who can step up and fill the void left by last season's leading receiver Jeff Hill.

North Attleborough

  • Last year's record: 10-1
  • Strength: Offensive line.
  • Concerns: Lack of experience at skill positions.
  • Coach: Don Johnson (3rd season, Career record: 18-4)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 12 lettermen
    • George Barth, WR/DB, Senior, 5-7, 165
    • Mateo Bravo, TE/DE, Senior, 5-10, 148
    • Tim Bredberg, TE/LB, Senior, 5-10, 166
    • Jake Costello, RB/LB, Senior, 5-10, 168
    • Brett Gaumond, RB/LB, Senior, 5-10, 173
    • Ryan Geehan, WR/DB, Senior, 5-10, 153
    • David Lang, RB/DB, Senior, 5-10, 160
    • Wesley Nicholls, RB/DB, Senior, 6-0, 182
    • Paul Norris, TE/DE, Senior, 6-2, 210
    • Cal Paulhus, WR/DB, Senior, 6-0, 163
    • Troy Richardson, RB/LB, Senior, 6-1, 187
    • Spyro Varetimos, QB/LB, Senior, 6-0, 190

Their only loss last season came in a close game against eventual Super Bowl winner Mansfield, but most of the skill players that got them to that point are gone. North Attleboro will certainly feel the loss of quarterback Paul McCarthy, top split-end Ryan Flannery and running back/leading scorer Danny Johnson. "Replacing all of those guys is a big challenge," said coach Don Johnson. Senior wide receiver Cal Paulhus will step in as the deep threat on the outside. Johnson will rely on senior Spyro Varetimos or junior Ryan Perron, currently battling for the No. 1 quarterback spot, to get the ball to Paulhus and captain Paul Norris (tight end). They should have no problem moving the ball through the air with a very talented offensive line that includes Sean Peters (6-4, 215 lbs.) and Eric Beckwith (6-2, 273 lbs.) at left and right tackle.
