Div 4A Mayflower (Large)

Blue Hills

  • Last year's record: 10-1
  • Strength: Defensive speed and experience on offense.
  • Concerns: Filling holes in skill positions.
  • Coach: Ed Catabia (4th season, 21-12)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 3 lettermen
    • Gustavo Batista, T/T, Senior, 5-9, 250
    • Keith Gomes, RB/LB, Senior, 5-7, 165
    • Jordin Rotman, RB/LB, Senior, 5-11, 170

Last year's Mayflower Large champion is loaded with experience, with 23 returning seniors. Blue Hills lost to Shawsheen in the Division 4 Super Bowl, 20-6. Coach Catabia will need to fill holes in the skill positions after graduating Andrew Parks, which was a big blow to the offense. However, Blue Hills will have a potent defensive squad with speed on its side from Vincent Burton (also a 1,549-yard rusher), Isaiah Teixeira, and Jordin Rotman. "They're read for a challenge. What we do is teach first and coach second and it works." Catabia notes to look out for returning starter Stephen Snyder and Donyee' Evans who have shown great athleticism.

Bristol-Plymouth

  • Last year's record: 4-6
  • Strength: Athleticism on offensive and defensive lines.
  • Concerns: Consistency and experience.
  • Coach: John Parris (5th season, 18-13)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games

With a young squad filling the skill positions, Parris is looking to leadership from quarterback Colin McGrather to head a team that returns four starters. Opposing teams will want to watch junior tailback Adam Mota, who has had solid performance in the preseason, along with junior fullback Andrew Lafave. On the line, senior offensive tackle and defensive end James Grinham has stepped as a leader in practice. "They're great kids and hopefully that will transition to wins and we'll be fine. Winning will come with consistency." The team will have more spread in its offense and a more simplified defense.

Southeastern

  • Last year's record: 8-4
  • Strength: Experience in the backfield.
  • Concerns: Inexperience on the line.
  • Coach: Dan Tripp (3rd season, 14-10)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 14 lettermen
    • Blake Ayemoba, OL/DL, Junior, 6-0, 240
    • Marshall Bean, WR/DB, Senior, 5-11, 155
    • Tyler Carver, WR/DB, Junior, 140
    • Davonte Chandler, RB/LB, Junior, 5-10, 145
    • Joe Christiano, RB/DB, Junior, 140
    • Derrick Davies, WR/DB, Junior, 5-10, 140
    • Charles Derry, FB/LB, Junior, 130
    • Jamoul Douglas, OL/DE, Junior, 6-0, 175
    • Denis Feely, TE/DE, Junior, 6-5, 215
    • Marco Lopes, RB/DB, Junior, 5-9, 144
    • Ed Noonan, WR/DB, Senior, 5-11, 145
    • Matt Small, TE/LB, Senior, 6-0
    • Steven Tangherlini, WR/DB, Senior, 5-7, 150
    • Efrain Vega, OL/LB, Junior, 5-11

With the loss of 17 starters from last fall and 16 the year before, Tripp is used to transition, a word that will be key this year. Southeastern is looking to captain Kevin Merrick to act as the anchor for offensive linemen Efrain Vega and Blake Ayemoba. Fellow senior captain Ken Brody is back under center. Watch for senior halfbacks Bobby Casey and Steve Ellis and senior captain Matt Small, who has taken a leadership role as offensive guard and defensive end. "We are concentrating on the fundamentals of line play." With nonleague play until week 5, the team will have time to work out the kinks. "We're in a position where we need to take baby steps to then walk and run."

Tri-County

  • Last year's record: (3-8)
  • Strength: Veteran leadership and returning defensive line.
  • Concerns: Experience in secondary and at quarterback.
  • Coach: Anthony Mazzola (2nd season, 3-8)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 8 lettermen
    • Jake Denning, WR/DB, Senior
    • Tom Hall, OL/DL, Sophomore
    • Steven Hogan, RB/ILB, Senior
    • Tyler Kaufman, RB/ILB, Senior, 5-6, 165
    • Ben Martin, RB/NG, Senior, 6-1, 245
    • Dave McClintock, OL/DL, Senior
    • James Veradt, OL/DL, Senior, 6-3, 303
    • James Walsh, QB/DB, Junior

Sophomore quarterback Matt Donovan's phenomenal work ethic combined with veteran leadership from fellow captains inside linebacker Steve Hogan, running back Tyler Kaufman and fullback Ben Martin should give great promise to Tri-County. Donovan is filling in for last year's leading rusher, Randy Hardy (900 yards last year, 1,400 as a junior), big shoes to fill. With the school's population on the rise, Tri-County shifted up from the Mayflower Small to the Large. Coach Mazzola has adjusted with the addition of several new coaches to condition his kids. "Fundamentals win football games, not the x's and o's." Players to look for include senior linebacker Chace Mechlinski, James Veradt, senior cornerback Mike Goudy and junior safety James Walsh.
