With 10 returning starters and 16 returning lettermen, the Panthers may repeat as an offensive beast in conference play. But Bauer knows that getting to the postseason is easier said than done. "The NEC will again be a competitive conference," said the coach. "We play Concord-Carlisle, Lynn English, Lynn Classical, Peabody, Winthrop, and Masconomet as nonleague games, which will be a challenge." Beverly returns its pair of dynamic running backs in Brendan Flaherty and Kenny Pierce, who combined for 27 touchdowns last season, and with four conference All-Stars on offense, Beverly certainly won't be lacking production.

Danvers

  • Last year's record: 4-7
  • Strength: Attitude.
  • Concerns: Skill positions, line positions.
  • Coach: Sean Rogers (3rd season, 5-17)
  • Playing surface: Grass

    • Michael Mazola, RB/DB, 2013, 5-8, 160
    • Justin wOODBURY, TE/LB, 2013, 6-1, 210

Rogers heads into his third season looking to improve the caliber of his squad. The team bounced back from a 1-10 campaign in 2010 to 4-7 last year, and Rogers believes it can only go up from here. "The team is still looking for its strength and identity," said the coach. "We're installing a new defensive scheme too, which no one has had any experience with yet. So we could either surprise a lot of teams or not." Senior captain Joe Manson will be solid on both the offensive and defensive lines this fall. The 6-foot-3-inch, 250-pound Manson set track and field records for discus and shot put events and with uncertainty in line and skill positions, Rogers will need his experienced seniors to step up and fill those voids.

Gloucester

  • Last year's record: 2-9
  • Strength: Senior leadership.
  • Concerns: Depth on offensive and defensive lines.
  • Coach: Tony Zerilli (2nd season, 2-9)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 12 lettermen

The Fishermen are looking to rebound after coach Zerilli's debut didn't live up to expectations. "We were very disappointed in the way last year turned out and we are looking to return this program back to it's winning tradition," said Zerilli. Zerilli's confidence is heightened primarily because of his returning upperclassmen that includes 12 seniors. Captains Mark Horgan, Santo Parisi, and Zac Smith have been making a tremendous impact on and off the field, according to the coach. Parisi, who only threw four touchdowns last season, will be a major source of production for Gloucester. "We had a very young team last year starting primarily juniors and sophomores," said Zerilli. "Those younger players got a lot of experience last year, and it wasn't until the end of the season that they began to gel as a team. This year we are looking for those same players, who are now a year older and have a year of experience under their belt, to really perform."

Marblehead

  • Last year's record: 8-3
  • Strength: Attitude, work ethic.
  • Concerns: Lack of experience.
  • Coach: Jim Rudloff (4th season, 23-12)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 4 lettermen
    • Tyler Bates, LB/OL, 2013, 5-11, 215
    • Zac Cuzner, RB/DB, 2013
    • Ian Maag, QB/SS, 2013
    • Kyle McCormack, DL, 2013, 5-11, 225

Winning the conference may be ambitious for coach Rudloff and a Magicians team with few returning starters, but they shouldn't be counted out, according to the coach. "We will be as good as our senior leadership and the maturity of our underclassmen take us," said Rudloff. "The talent is there, but it's inexperienced." Last season, the Magicians averaged roughly 24 points per game, dominating in conference play with a 28-point victory over Salem and a 42-point win against Danvers. But this was all thanks to All-Scholastic Will Quigley, who will be entering his freshman year at Brown this fall. Quigley was Marblehead's key cog, scoring 20 times in 2011, and with Marblehead's nonleague schedule featuring Malden Catholic, St. Mary's, and Hingham, the Magicians will have their work cut out for them. "Our nonleague schedule is as tough as our league schedule so there is no room for error," Rudloff said. "We will be tested early and often."

Salem

  • Last year's record: 4-7
  • Strength: Experience.
  • Concerns: Team chemistry.
  • Coach: Scott Connolly (9th season, 32-56)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 11 lettermen

The Witches lost key players in the trenches, but return a lot of senior experience. Nine starters are back on defense and eight on offense, yet Connolly is still concerned about how his team will mesh together. "We have a lot of talented kids and a lot of kids who are very good at their positions," said the coach. "But when game time comes around, it'll be interesting to see how they respond as a unit, because that's what really matters." Salem will be looking for the Christian Dunston-Ben Kapnis connection this fall, as the QB-WR duo combined for four touchdowns last season.

Swampscott

  • Last year's record: 9-2
  • Strength: Work habits.
  • Concerns: Inexperienced.
  • Coach: Steve Dembowski (14th season, 101-47)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 21 lettermen

For the first time in more than 40 years the Big Blue returns no starters, but 22 seniors provide options. Ten players saw considerable playing time last season and even more understand the system heading into 2012, according to coach Dembowski. The Big Blue will need to start putting the puzzle pieces together quickly in the nonconference part of the schedule before competing in the tough CAL/NEC II. "The team has shown tremendous dedication in the off-season," said the coach. "The defense has some experience, but all 11 spots are open," said Dembowski. "[Brian] Santry is poised to assume the starting quarterback roll but will compete with junior [Brendan] McDonald for the job." Even though Swampscott returns no starters, the work ethic and battles for positions could mean the Big Blue may still be a force.
