    • Brandon Owens, LB/TB, 2013, 5-11, 200

Under the guidance of new head coach Joe Gaff - the team's defensive coordinator the past four seasons - the Eagles look to defend their Division 1 Super Bowl title. Now that Preston Cooper (45 career touchdowns) and Deontae Ramey-Doe have graduated, Brandon Owens and 225-pound fullback Luke Catarius will handle the carries out of the backfield. Senior Brendan Craven, who backed up quarterback Bartley Regan the last three seasons, will finally have his turn at commanding the offense. He'll look to 6-foot-3-inch Lincoln Collins often, as the Villanova-bound receiver is one of the best in the state. The offense may suffer some growing pains as they make transitions at the skill positions, but the offensive line will be as strong as ever, anchored by Virginia-bound Jack McDonald.

Catholic Memorial

  • Last year's record: 8-2
  • Strength: Good work ethic, skill players, team speed.
  • Concerns: Inexperienced.
  • Coach: Alex Campea (9th season, 87-63)

    • Connor Peck, OL/DL, 2014, 6-2, 245
    • Patrick Shore, QB/DB, 2014, 6-1, 175

Only four starters are returning from last year's team, which finished second in the highly-competitive Catholic Conference, and coach Alex Campea is expecting a platoon of players to pick up the slack. Among the many starters gone are linebacker Cam Williams and running back Armani Reeves (both at Ohio State), as well as quarterback A.J. Doyle. However, defensive end Peter Ngobidi is one of the best linemen in the state and will also take some snaps at running back alongside Chris Siggers. Junior Pat Shore will fill the void at quarterback, and Campea is confident in his abilities to fill the role. "The challenge is looking for the next player to step up," Campea said. "But if we work hard and improve, we'll be okay."

Malden Catholic

  • Last year's record: 3-7
  • Strength: Senior leadership and experience at the skill positions.
  • Concerns: Inexperience at offensive and defensive line, depth.
  • Coach: Jeff Smith (2nd season, 3-7 (3-18 St. Mary's))
  • Playing surface: Artificial turf
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 18 lettermen

Malden Catholic is the smallest school amongst the Catholic Conference teams, but coach Jeff Smith said his Lancers don't plan on shying away from anyone. "We're going to build on what we started last year - being a tough, competitive team," Smith said. "We definitely have work to do, but these guys aren't afraid to work and get better every day." Senior running backs Anthony Finnochiaro and Axel Kabeya anchor the backfield, while Peter Norris and Mike O'Neil give quarterback Brendan Tobey strong targets at wide receiver. Senior linebacker Joe Penta anchors the defense. Smith acknowledged that his team has a small offensive line, but is confident his team makes up for it with speed.

St. John's Prep

  • Last year's record: 4-6
  • Strength: Experience.
  • Concerns: Depth.
  • Coach: James O'Leary (29th season, 190-104-2)

    • F.J. Murphy, DT, 2013, 6-0, 230

St. John's Prep emerges as a serious contender for the Catholic Conference title, as O'Leary welcomes back 18 lettermen from last season's 4-6 team. Running back Johnathan Thomas rushed for 13 touchdowns last year, and is primed for a breakout junior season. Alongside senior back Alex Moore, the two will give defenses trouble on the ground. Quarterback Jack Shario, who was thrown into the starting lineup last season when Tom Gaudet got hurt in Week 1, will now have full command of the offense. Shario has strong weapons in Lucas Bavaro and Gerald Kahari, who are also two main cogs on the defense.

    • Hunter Taute, RB/LB, 2013, 6-2, 245
    • Harrison Walsh, 2013, 5-11, 195

Xaverian is primed for a run at the Catholic Conference title, anchored by the punishing backfield of 245-pound running back Hunter Taute and the 285-pound Maurice Hurst. Hurst (Michigan) will also repeat as the star on the defensive line. "He's the top defensive lineman in Massachusetts and the Northeast," coach Charlie Stevenson said. "We're looking for him to be better, and he's bigger and stronger." Alongside Hurst will be Ray Gobbi, a 305-pound defensive lineman that also plays at offensive guard. He'll help protect senior Austin DeCarr, who will take over at quarterback after splitting time with graduate Chris Calvanese. DeCarr has sure weapons in D.J. Pagliuca and sophomore Joe DeNucci, as the Hawks look to improve on last year's 6-5 finish.

Lynn Tech

  • Last year's record: 8-4
  • Strength: Linemen.
  • Concerns: Depth, staying healthy.
  • Coach: James Runner (3rd season, 9-13)
  • Playing surface: Artificial turf
  • Schedule: Complete list of games

Runner thinks one of his toughest decisions will be how to spread out who gets the ball because his seniors can score from anywhere. Strong linemen on both offense and defense will propel the team through conference play as long as they avoid injuries. But with the return of captain Kenny Golmes and junior quarterback Billy Colon, he said, "It's going to be a great year."

Whittier

  • Last year's record: 6-5
  • Strength: Experienced linemen.
  • Concerns: Inexperienced at skill positions.
  • Coach: Kevin Bradley (12th season, 88-36.)
  • Playing surface: Grass
  • Schedule: Complete list of games
  • showReturning: 2 lettermen
    • Dave Sachs, OL/DL, 2014, 6-1, 210
    • Austin Sciacca, OL/DL, 2014, 5-10, 200

A really young team - Bradley could theoretically be starting 17 underclassmen each game - doesn't have the Wildcats without big hopes for the season. They've never had a losing season and are hoping this year won't be any different under the supervision of a strong senior class. "It you have leadership, that carries an awful lot of weight and puts your team in the right direction," Bradley said.
