Purses for Monday's 112th Boston Marathon will increase by nearly 40 percent over last year, with the men's and women's winners earning a record $150,000, the Boston Athletic Association and John Hancock Financial, the race's prime sponsor, announced yesterday.

The total prize purse was boosted to $796,000, a 38 percent hike over last year's $575,000. The top prize for the men's and women's open division winners is the highest guaranteed award for a World Marathon Majors race. The circuit also includes marathons in London, Chicago, Berlin, and New York City.

Winner of the wheelchair division will receive $15,000 and the masters division $10,000.
