The group was started in response to the lack of an American presence among the top finishers at the major marathons. ''Until we have Americans who can compete in Boston, I don't think the public will accept the resurgence," says Keith Hanson. ''Boston is an absolutely necessary part of this. Nothing else has the mystique and the history and the recognition."
