And where were Fisk and Yaz, anyway?
Ten free minutes for me, 10 free throwaway lines for you . . .

2. James Posey wants four years? As far as I'm concerned, James Posey gets four years. I won't fault him if he ends up taking more money to join the Hornets, though. Byron Scott's smart, tough team would be an ideal fit for him.
3. Well, I think it's obvious now why few questioned Tampa Bay's decision to take Josh Hamilton over Spring, Texas phenom Josh Beckett in the 1999 MLB Draft. You know a kid has uncommon gifts when he takes off nearly four years to smoke crack, gets his life together, and somehow returns with his immense talent intact. His is a story even ESPN can't overdramatize, though bloviating Chris Berman sure tried his best.
4. With each new Melrose Place-style antic in the A-Rod divorce saga - seriously, he was spying on his wife? - I catch myself wondering how history would be different if he had ended up coming to the Red Sox in the winter of '03. For starters, there's a pretty good chance we'd be whining about a 93-year curse right about now, and it's also worth remembering that the admirable Jon Lester was the Single A pitcher the Sox were sending to Texas along with Manny in exchange for A-Rod. Sometimes the best deals . . .
5. Old friend Steve Solloway paid appropriate tribute to the Official Defunct Minor League Team of TATB with this well-written and melancholy piece on the Maine Guides. Hard to believe they've been gone 20 years. I'd also love to read Steve Buckley's take on the Guides at some point. Back in the day, he was the must-read beat writer for the Press Herald, and some of his best work still occupies a place in my keeper file.
6. I was intrigued by one reader's suggestion that the Sox should pursue San Diego's Khalil Greene - a smooth fielder who drove in 97 runs last season - if Jed Lowrie doesn't cut it as Julio Lugo's replacement. But there are two negatives to Greene, beyond that he's signed though next season: he's having truly brutal season at the plate (63 OPS+), and his most similar player through age 27 is this guy. Upon further review, I'll pass.
7. This week's must-read from the life-altering SI Vault: Leigh Montville's pitch-perfect farewell to Teddy Ballgame. I loved this description of Williams while he was an instructor at Red Sox spring training in the late-'70s.
He would argue with anyone about politics, sports, detergents, anything. He would question. He would tell stories. He would interact, hour after hour. There was a liveliness about him that was different from the ordinary. He was larger than larger-than-life, if that makes any sense. He was Ted Williams, and he knew who he was. He played his own role. Himself.
8. C'mon, I know you had the same thought I did when you heard Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman are splitting up: Who gets custody of Simmons?
9. I like the Celtics' signing of 7-footer Patrick O'Bryant for no reason other than that he must have done something right to be the ninth pick in the draft just two years ago.
10. As for today's Completely Random Baseball Card:
I know, you expect me to make a joke about 80-something-year-old Yogi Berra having better bat-speed than 'Tek during batting practice last night, but nope . . . I just wanted to point out that this is a damn cool card. No snark required for this one.

Where was Pudge and Yaz anyways? They weren't the only ones missing either. I found that to be quite odd. Not one Boston Hall of Famer. The game was awesome. Plenty of key moments throughout the game and certainly plenty of gutty performances from both teams. Watching Tito trying to figure a way to keep Kazmir from pitching tonite was interesting. I felt bad for Uggla. Three K's and three errors wasn't pretty to watch. I thought Holliday should have gone another inning. What was up with the fans geting all over Paps? It got to be brutal listening to them. What I didn't get was booing while he was trying to get them to Riviera. That was odd. I expected him to be booed during the pregame ceremonies not while pitching. Drew winning the MVP was poetic justice. Looks like we will have home field in the Series this year.
Selig Follies, All-Star Edition... now that World Series home field is riding on the game, Francona and Hurdle got a message in about the 13th inning that the game would continue -- no matter what -- until there was a winner. By the 15th, each team had put its last available pitcher in the game. Hurdle was asking around the dugout for emergency pitchers. Would have been schweet if home field advantage had been decided by someone who hadn't thrown a pitch since Little League.
As for the Sarah/Jimmy breakup, I'm sorry to hear about it... but I am looking forward to the paparazzi stalking Bennimel.
Well done, Yankee fans. Way to be led by the nose by the Daily News. What a mouth-breathing display with the booing of Papelbon. You'd like to think that for one night, you'd root for your league. That said, he needs to open his mouth a whole lot less.
Love the fact that Francona pinch-hit for Tek during the game. I appreciate everything he can does for our team, but there's no reason to showcase his lack of hitting skills to the general populace. Of course, it's usually the guy hitting 265 that comes through in the clutch at the ASB. No wonder it went 15.
What was your fav pop-rod ASB moment?
1) Sitting out the HR Derby.
2) The pop-up to the catcher
3) The strike-out
4) Reports of him spying on his wife
5) The Madonna rumor
You think he thought it was October or something?
Good to see low life, me first, toupee wearing, pass the KY sexaholic Wade Boggs showing his true colors last night by sporting a Yankee cap. Classless until the end, huh Wade? Just like the NY fans....I had stepped away for a second, but they BOO Mazeroski as well? I missed it.
I tried to watch the game but the pre-game introductions were endless and I could not take the sounds of McCarver's endless fawning over Jeter, especially duirng that first at bat.
Roger Clemens + Radomski's Smoking Gun = Prison
You have a great question there: "Where were Fisk and Yaz, anyway? Who has the answer for that one? Some one please. They should have been there. Were they not invited because they were Red Sox? And what's with Boggs' with the Yankee cap? That is not what he wears in Cooperstown.
Khalil Greene is a mix of Spicolli from Fast Times and Tanner from the Bad News Bears. I'd stay far away. 2007 was a fluke and to see his body grow 2x larger than his head makes me fear he is in the middle of a post-Mitchell Report deflation.
C'mon, man, that's WORCESTER'S own Richie Gedman you're talking about there...
I want to say thank you for the commentary that appears on this blog. Too many of the beat writers working at this paper tip toe around saying much of anything critical.
I agree on Posey.
Remember, as Simmons would say, it's not a four-year deal. It's three years, and then a fourth year as "James Posey's Expiring Contract," which makes him very tradeable in that last year.
Just Do It, Danny!
I thank whatever higher power exists everyday that A-Rod never came to Boston. Also, I want no part of Khalil Greene (although he has a very cool name). I noticed the same thing with there being no Red Sox HOFers present (technically Wade Boggs, but of course he wore his Yankee cap, way to stick it in our eye NY, you're sooooo subtle). I'm surprised that you have nothing to say about the way the bleacher bums treated Papelbon. A few out of context comments and they threaten his pregnant wife and openly root against their own team (the AL). We all knew that Yankee fans aren't the most respectful, but this is kind of a new low, the whole wife thing reaches Philly Eagles and Oakland Raiders fan levels.
C'mon! Don't poo-poo the pride of Worcester, Richie Gedman!!!
Man, why you gotta go bag on Richie G? For 3 years I loved that guy ('84-'86). I still remember the late inning HR he hit off Willie Hernandez in '86 to turn a game around. Loved him. Was he the slowest player in MLB history? Guess I would not want to see him or his incarnation out at short although ALMOST anything has got to be better than JL.
I do enjoy your stuff, but would offer this one thought - you have won the lottery in getting to sit in the pontification throne where Ernie Roberts and Ray Fitzgerald and Montville and McDonough all ruled. Please do try and resist the impulse to do 'late-night comedy schtick'. I have long resented that my beloved sports page seems to have become an audition stage for guys looking for a job on Letterman.
I love the theater of sports as much as anyone, and writing about Clemens and Farve and A-Rod is all good. But don't go to Hollywood. Real Boston sports fans would also love to know what the heck is up with Nick Kazur and the Chinese kid who won the MVP at the minor league all-star game and if Pierce is going to need a larger head band after being hailed for three months.
Real sports meat on the bone - it is what seperates Gammons from everyone else. Forget Kimmel and Leno, put McDonough and Gammon's photos above your desk.
I agree - give Posey his 4 years. Do not underestimate what a good teammate he is, as well as a clutch performer.
I disagree about the Yankee Stadium pregame ceremony, which I think was better than the Fenway one in '99...
After A-Rod hugged all the HoF third basemen, he was standing next to legendary Yankee Wade Boggs and I remarked to my wife, "Look at the two philanderers Boggs and A-Rod standing next to each other."
Love that rug on Boggsy's head.
How about Willie Mays stiffing Josh Hamilton? King Willie didn't even acknowledge Hamilton when he ran out to CF.
Other than John Kerry, does anyone love a camera more than Reggie?
Bruce Sutter and Gary Carter are the two most questionable HoF inductees of the last 30 years. I still can't believe Sutter got in before the terrific Rich Gossage.
I enjoyed the Red Sox getting booed during their introductions. Good times.
The appearance of George Steinbrenner was the game's Weekend at Bernie's moment. The Boss looked like he was embalmed. It was actually a little sad to see him looking so frail. I always respected the Boss because all he wanted was to win.
No comment on New York's treatment (both media and fans) of Papelbon? Am I the only one that is disgusted by the NY Daily News making up a story where none existed and whipping the Stadium fans into an undeserved fury against Paps? I spent the 7th inning on fuming about this. Bunch of animals...
Chad, thanks a million for the link to the Leigh Montville piece. That's what great baseball writing is. Which brings me to a question: I read an article once about Williams' final at bat that was written by either Vidal or Mailer or one of their ilk. Any idea where I can find that?
Was Robert Parish the last center the Celtics got from Golden State? I know Parish wasn't a free agent. It would be nice to see the 22-year-old resemble anything close to what the Chief brought us.
Rory,
Get a sense of humor.
Of course, none of us should be surprise that Yankee fans brought truth to the stereotype that they are a bunch of classless morons. Christ, aren't you embarassed? I'm embarassed for you.
Congrats, Drew - way to shut up the Yankee dumba$$es.
It is now quite clear what despicable people the majority of New York Yankee fans really are. Show some class you ingrates.
papelbon is a cry baby and so are all of you. wah wah wah i can't take getting booed, omg no class. Deal with it. New Yorkers deal with it when we're in boston. shut up. At least philly fans have balls.
If you think the Red Sox pregame in '99 was better than last night's, you are definitely smoking something.
The whole Paps thing is a bit over the top. The NY Daily News is written for a 5th grade reading level, and apparently its readers have a 5th grade maturity level.
I appreciate that they wanted the honor of closing out the game to go to Rivera. It was fitting to do so. Like any professional ballplayer, Paps wanted to be "the guy" but he understood what was right and didn't appear to make that big of a fuss. God forbid we should question the 'superiority complex' of New Yorkers - I can tell you first hand they get a bit testy when you do.
Read Papelbon's comments that if he was manager he would be the closer, if it was other way around and if the best closer is from boston and a yankee says he would close if he was manager in last year of stadium, how do you think boston fans would react?
In regards to Paps and the Daily News, didnt know Yankees fans could read.
To DaveinLA
The piece is by John Updike. First words of the title are "Hub Kid..."
For DaveinLA - You're looking for the legendary essay "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" by John Updike. Google it.
I'm kind of shocked that I haven't seen any coverage on Navarro's role in the 8th inning last night. (Feel free to point me in the right direction if you've seen any articles on this)
I can't be the only one thinks he tanked that throw to second on Tejada's steal on purpose. That guy is too good a player to blow the throw that bad. Worse yet, he throws a perfect strike to second in the ninth with Rivera on the mound. And just to make matters worse, the guy made no effort to slap a tag on Tejada on the sac fly. I doubt he could have gotten Tejada, but he could have made it close by at least trying to make a play. Even my Yankee fan buddy called me right away to say he thought Navarro tanked that eighth on purpose!
Any Sox fan who doesn't think that Navarro didn't catch that eighth inning last night with a chip on his shoulder after the Sox/Rays scuffle and Papelbon's comments are lying to themselves. To me, that was the story of the night that I'm not seeing anyone talk about.
MVP Drew put the finishing touches on them Yankers. RED SOX 2007 World Champions, Terry managing the last all-star game at the Stadium, Lin getting MVP in the futures game, and then Drew. Laugh out loud. It gets worse. They still have AROD and no pitching to make a run. It will be tough for them to even make the playoffs. Good time to be a Yankee fan, NOT. We want them to hate us.
The yankees get booed in Boston because they are on the other team! I was completely disgusted with New York and Fox last night (then again I usually feel that way with Buck and McCarver). Whether you are a Yankee fan, Tampa fan or Red sox fan last night was the one night of the year they were they are all playing on the same team for the same goal. Have some respect for these guys they are all stars and trying to help win some team in the american league home field advantage. Wait to boo them until we come back to New York and sweep them.
Boston fans at Fenway would never treat Yankee players at an ALL-STAR game the same way they treated the RED SOX last night. Oh, we hate them as much as they hate us....but with more class. Last night was about the AL vs NL and not the yanks vs the RED SOX. Ya Paps can talk too much, but there is nothing like being taken out of context or just flat out lying about what somebady said (or ment to say). Thank GOD that J.D. Drew came to the rescue last night and put at least a small cork in the yankee fans' classless big mouth.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts and I'm a life long Red Sox Fan. The army sent me here to Ft Drum, in up-state NY, in the summer of '99. I've been around this great country of ours and the globe serving the fine citizens of our nation. I have been to many ball parks. In my travels, Yankee fans have always been the most foul, juvenile people in the room or grand stand. They are terrible winners, and are even worse when they lose. When they win, it’s because your team sucked so badly. They can’t even see how good their team was. When they lose, it’s the officiating, the field conditions, your teams luck, bugs from Lake Erie, etcetera. I was not surprised in the least at the treatment of the Red Sox players and coaches last evening, rather I expected it. The people of the city and the state of New York are the biggest ignoramuses on the planet. When I dared share the story of my father having a slight heart attack the morning following the greatest comeback of all times, (down 0-3 in ’04) and eventually not being able to attend the World Series victory parade, I was told by one of the biggest cry babies of them all, that it served him right for living long enough to see them win. Needless to say, that bastard had to have a new plate made for his big blabber mouth. I had a broken hand. So when seeing how those who run the Yankees and cheer for the team treated not only Red Sox players, but several other players too, it was no big surprise here. It was just par for the course. Here’s to our beloved Red Sox. Let’s go out and win another. I truly hope that any child born since 2000 that grows to be a Yankee fan, NEVER, EVER sees them win.
I hate New Yooork... Come on let's all sing together now.... I never bought into that old publicity promo & after seeing how the people of New York behaved last night, & have done so on most occasions when they get undeserved positive publicity, I hate the city & it's people even more. They don't deserve our respect nor do they deserve the billions of dollars they receive from the tourists. How do corporations continue to invest & how moronic the population is, & how disgustingly they treat visitors, not to mention the exorbitant costs associated with visiting. God forbid if you are one of the countless visitors that is unfortunate to be a victim of any crime there. The Uniformed attitude is well, they shouldn't be here. Similar to the way out of town fans are treated in Yankee Stadium, after seeking medical attention for wounds suffered from being hit in the head by a battery.
Sorry to say I was Born in NY. My parents were smart enough to get their family out of their in '65. Thank God. Most of my extended family born around my time are drunks & troublemakers now & still living in that disgusting !@%Hole. I expect that by the time they begin reaching retirement age in the next decade or so, the majority of them will be living on the streets or in shelters with the rest of the rats that inhabit the city.
finally a writer who tells it like it is a breath of fresh air around new england keep up the good writing also very glad arod is not here keep manny over him any day of the week
Ouimet...you mean to say the verbatim, line for line, step by step ripoff perpetrated by the wholly unoriginal slobs in NY last night was better? I guess it only took six months of breathing Hank's second hand smoke to rot your brain. A sad truth for you to deal with...Ted Williams was much more important to the game that George could ever hope to be. That is what made 1999 so compelling. Last night was a very obvious attempt to duplicate that moment.
Did anyone see ONE good looking New Yorker last night? They completely live up to the stereotype. Even the women in NY have hair coming out from underneath their shirts neckline.
The '99 ceremony was much better, it was actually moving, in part because you knew you were likely seeing a true legend of the game take the field for the last time. The way the players swarmed Teddy Ballgame at the mound...nothing approached that in last nights ceremony. It felt canned.
Beckett has two WS to his credit, and an MVP in one of them. In '07, even though he didn't get the WS MVP, they don't even get there without his pitching in the Cleveland series. I'll take Beckett over Hamilton every time and not look back. It's 2-0.
Yeah, you might have had to get rid of Lester for A-Rod, but you might have been able to keep Hanley Ramirez. You'd have a line-up of: Ellsbury, , Hanley Ramirez, A-Rod, Papi, Manny, Pedroia, Tek, and Brandon Moss.
Of those guys, only Manny, A-Rod, Papi and Tek are older, veteran, higher paid guys.
You can't play "ifs and buts." When you think about the infielders the Red Sox would have had if they kept everyone: Youkilis, Lowrie, Freddy Garcia, Hanley Ramirez, Pedroia. It's funny they can't find a shortstop and they gave away Garcia and Ramirez.
chad forget kory...the comedy edge of your stuff is what got you here!
Hey joe. In case you missed it this was the All Star game. Not your normal Sox vs Yanks game. I like others here am embarrassed for NY fans for their behavior. It was one of the most sickening displays of classlessness I have EVER seen.
On the other hand I've heard nothing about Francona's class. I hope he learned a lesson that NY fans don't know what class is
joe-its one thing to boo the man on the field. Its another to pelt his parade truck with pens and baseballs while hurling insults at him and his pregnant wife.
Therein lies the difference between Sox fans and Yanks fans. You don't know when to quit and none of you have ever heard of the proverbial "line" as you all seem to have no issue consistently crossing it.
The story about Ted Williams's last at bat was by John Updike and is entitled "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu."
Speaking of the 1999 MLB draft, what is the status of the #7 overall pick from that year, Kyle Snyder? Is he still somewhere in the Red Sox system?
Class act by MLB & the Yankees. Papelbon should grow up and learn to keep his mouth shut. Maybe then the Yankee fans wouldn't have been so hard on him with the game on the line. As a Yankee fan, I'm totally disappointed in their booing of Mazeroski. Terry Francona is a class act. In the same mold as Joe Torre. A real American Leaguer.
Red Sox fans should think back to their last AllStar game in 99' and how loud they booed Jeter when introduced. And I thought the rivalry dead when the Red Sox won their 2nd World Series in 4 years.
As Mentioned the Pre-game yesterday at Yankee Stadium was an attempt to duplicate that of the Red Sox in 1999 except , We knew Teddy Ballgame and you Georgie Porgie are no Ted Williams.
Yankee fans should think back to the 2005 Season opener at Fenway and the thunderous ovation Mariano Rivera received from the Fenway Faithful
Yankee fans should think back to the 2005 Season opener at Fenway and the thunderous ovation Mariano Rivera received from the Fenway Faithful
All that money spent just to slam the red sox, shame on new york.
Even after all the ribbing that Papelbum got, he was quoted as saying that he was misunderstood and was "willing" to step aside for Mariano Rivera.
LOL. As if he had a choice. It's not the fans that didn't understand.
Oh you fans of that team that plays in the tiny village north of the BIG APPLE. Reading the posted comments a shrink would identify them akin to "Penis Envy". When your team accomplishs as much as the Yankees have you then may open your mouths. By the way have you recovered from 18-1 yet. Talk to New Yorkers when you have done something.
If New York fans had half the class as their all star players they wouldn't have embarrassed themselves once again.
Uncle Mike...we took solace fom 18-1 by hoisting our 17th NBA Championship. Isiah still works for the Knicks and they took a Euroweenie in the first round. Unlike the G'men, the Pats will be back in the Superbowl next year...It's impossible to envy those you pity.
I knew the Red Sox were going to get booed going into yankee stadium, but when you are in a tied game you do not taunt your pitcher. I understand it wasn't all yankee fans that acted like jerks, but when pretty much the whole stadium is not showing class, that is a good portion. Obviously, Jonathan Papelbon was misquoted by the Daily News and he was going to get booed either way going into yankee stadium, but when chants of "Overated" are thrown at the pitcher, in a tied game, who is trying to contribute to an AL victory that determines homefield advantage in the World Series really just shows poor sportmanship. The fact of the matter is that yankee chants usually turn around to haunt them. If we can remember the '04 "Who's your Daddy" chants to Pedro Martinez. We all know what happened that year. You could also say the chants really didn't do anything this year when J.D. Drew was awarded MVP in yankee stadium. Like I said earlier all yankee fans did not show lack of class, but SOME did. Also, to all of the yankee fans that do think Jonathan Papelbon is overated all I have to say is he definatley not. He has a ring to show for it for only being on the Sox for three and a half seasons.(made debut in July of '05). He also is tied for second for the most saves this season. SOME yankee fans left a bitter taste in the wrong guys mouth. And for the Daily News why don't you put this in your paper: This is a quote by Jonathan Papelbon on July 14th talking about the ninth inning situation, "I would understand it," said Papelbon. "I think it would be kind of bull-headed of me and kind of selfish of me not to understand. I understand it. I fully understand what's going on here."
The Red Sox won the WS in 2004 and 2007. That is twice this century. How many times have the Yankees won the WS this century?
Look NY fans, booing Paps is one thing and I can understand it to a degree. Threatening a pregnant woman is another. Not cool. Although I think Papelbon will settle for another ring this year while you spend October watching your best player April-Rod chase around a woman twice his age and more used up than your mothers.
Fisk and Yaz are third rate Hall of Famers anyway. Plans are in the works to kick them out. I originally thought that Papelbon was just a benign riverdancing bumpkin, but it turns out he has an overinflated ego and sense of entitlement. I predict his career path will be more Eric Gagne than Mariano Rivera. Don't mind me, I'm still enjoying the Super Bowl. Eighteen and one. Eighteen and one. Eighteen and one.
I'm always amazed not only by how many Yankees fans read this site, but how many CAN read this site.
Look Red Sux Fans
You people have titanium ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you fans ARE THE BIGGEST BLOWHARDS KNOWN TO MAN KIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD ONLY KNOW HOW TO WIN WITH CLASS! It figures that PAPE THE BUM LOST THE FRIGGIN LEAD AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And of course as usual THE BEST CLOSER EVER HAD TO CLEAN UP HIS CAT LITTER. PAPE THE BUM smells like the sewage blasting off the shores of CAPE COD. Why don't you people stick to doing what you know best: DIG TUNNELS. OH I GUESS THAT WORKED OUT LIKE THE REST OF YOUR SEASON WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NY MIKE
Maybe the Yankee fans didn't care that they were booing their own team (AL) because they knew the end result of the game--and home field advantage for the World Series--would have absolutely no impact on the Yankees this season. Perhaps they deserve our pity instead of our contempt...
Coming from a former Chicago fan now living in Florida, I always thought that from experiences and observations of Green Bay Packer fans that they were the most stupid and classless of all fans. Yankee fans top Packer fans in both categories.!
Venice gal
I had forgotten that Eck was in the Hall as an A. The least he could have done was brought his Red Sox cap too.
I enjoyed seeing the old Hall of Famers. I grew up in Baltimore so it was fun to see all the Orioles - even Luis Aparicio. I used to like the way the announcer used to stretch out his name when he came up to bat. My dad and I used to have running friendly arguments about who was better - Brooks or Frank Robinson. I was on Frank's side. He chose to get seats in right field behind Frank in Game 3 of the 1966 WS for me rather than behind third for him. Seeing Brooks brought back memories of my dad and those days.
And I was really sad to hear the news about Posey. I guess the cats will have to go back to their regular unofficial names of Tim and Wakefield. They were sad about it too - their cat-brains had just processed the change.
I'll tell you why Yaz wasn't there last night. He hates to see the place go. He owned Yankee Stadium for years...and as far as I'm concerned, he still does.
When I started following the Sox every day, in 1966, we were pitiful. Since the one-day playoff loss to Cleveland in 1948, New England fans got used to being an also-ran. But instead of drinking the Victory Gin, like in North Chicago, a funny thing happened on the way to the ballpark.
Yaz was a winner. Others named Scott, Petrocelli, Conigliaro, Foy, Smith and Lonborg started to catch the fever.
In one game at the "old" Yankee Stadium, Yaz was out with the flu, literally flat on his back in the clubhouse. Brought in as a pinch-hitter in the eighth, with the Sox down 1-0, Yaz proceeded to club a tape meaure shot to deep center...one of the longest home runs ever seen at Yankee Stadium. Top of the tenth, and Yaz comes up again and powers another massive shot to the exact same spot. The Sox held, and the win put them into first place in the Summer of '67. I was there. Sox "nation" was born, we believed, and the Impossible Dream changed the attitude of New England and its team.
Although he never quite made it to the promised land, Yaz picked the team up like a sack of potatoes and carried it on his back into consistent contention. His constant assault on Yankees pitching also kept the pinstripers in the dumps for many years. The Sox of 2004 and 2007 were eventual outgrowths of the big change. Thank you, Yaz.
As for Pudge, he probably had better things to do, too.
JJ-
It would have been Lester AND Manny for A-Rod - so your lineup would have a LF hole in it.
Maybe everyone knows that will be the last meaningful game in the old stadium and wanted to have mariano close it out and who knows if He will ever close out another one, Meaningful game that is. I was just surprised they didn't demand that Yogi was the catcher. I do agree that Paps needs to do less talking... Take a page out of Manny's book. War - RED SOX REPEATING !!
I am glad somebody brought up the fact that Wade Boggs wore the Yankees cap. Did you see how fast the people at Fox flashed his info and took it down? Classless act by Boggs. At least Winfield and i believe Gary Carter wore both hats or at least showed them when introduced. I do feel that was a fairly large rip-off of the ceremonies held at Fenway back in 1999. 'Tonight's SPECIAL Guest.... GEORGE STEINBRENNER?" are you kidding me? what was that all about? Good comment about how he looked embalmed, funny stuff.
Again, the production by Fox was awful. CUt from the entrance of Rivera to go to a commercial? nice planning, wait until the guy gets to the mound fro crying out loud. For all that was mad eof him playing/pitching, that is what you do? I'm a Sox fan but still, i do think they did such a bad job with that.
Try and getting back from commercials BEFORE the pitch is actually thrown. What a novel concept that would be. I know it is hard to figure out a commercial runs for 30 seconds and you have a 30 second window, match-up each commecial. Oh and how many times do we have to see a commercial for Fringe ( i like dthe one in the actual playing field) but putting it on during the game is absurd.
Enough about Fox - how about Erin Andrews (i think it was her, i cringed everytime she spoke) on ESPN on Monday night? HOW DOES SHE HAVE THAT JOB? can she not ask questions from the top of her head? She had some of the WORST questions most inane, irrelevant questions i have ever heard.
Oh yeah, NICE COMMENTS BY Jeannie Zelasko during the MVP presentation. Real classy, real professional and journalistic. Just awful. If that is not a perfect example of the Fox crew being pro yankees and pro-new york I do not know what is. Just awful.
At least the game was interesting, well when Tim 'i think i still work for the yankees' McCarver, was NOT speaking. Nice interview with Yogi! Great ballplayer, but my gawd why dont you prep the guy for the interview. Ever think you might have to do that for a guy that is oh 83 YEARS OLD!!
I don't find Papelbon getting booed any worse than the booing Johnny Damon got on his return to Fenway. He played terrific for the Sox. And, there isn't a one of us that wouldn't have taken the money from the Yankees. They offered him 12 million more. I think that we have become a society of pansies. So what if the fans boo. They changed their tune when Drew hit his homer.
I can tolerate the booing during the game. Sure, it shows a lack of class and integrity, but major league players are going to be booed at least once in their careers. But shouting obscenities and threats while the players are with their families is an all time low.
To Yankee fan in NE:
The point isn't that they booed a Red Sox player. I don't think anyone faults them for that. Its expected. Its the time and place they booed. Not during the AS game. It was unwarranted and disappointing to me.
NY Mike,
Mariano did not clean up after Papalbon. It was your next year's closer, K-Rod. Papelbon run was unearned, E-2. What a shame that the MVP was a Red Sox and again they will have home field advantage in the WS. You don't have a lot to cheer about lately, do you?
To Dan-- Why would Dioneer Navarro intentionally throw the ball into CF? The Rays are a 1/2 game out and have one of the best home records in baseball. They are legitimate WS contenders. Why would he intentionally try to lose home field advantage when the Rays can't buy a win on the road? In a long list of inane postings, yours takes the cake. There is too much emphasis on sports rivalries when the players don't give a damn. This country is at war, the economy sucks, gas is $4 + a gallon and all of NY is worried that a dumbass country boy who can throw 97 MPH makes a statement that is taken out of context? No wonder most of the world hates our self absorbed, arrogant asses. Let's all remember what sports is for... a diversion from our work-a-day lives and something that we can come together to enjoy.
To quote Rodney King...."Can't we all just get along?"
Chad,
It's quite evident all the pain the Yankees inflicted on you during your formative years and on into most of your adult life has really taken it's toll. Your insults and attempts at bashing the Yankees are so lame there often laughable.
If a couple of world titles can't heal your psyche get some therapy. Seriously.
BTW, are you still deleting comments you don't like? Can't take a little criticism, huh? Yankee fans can dish it out but they can take it too. Sox fans? Uh...not so much. Guess this one won't make it then.
I'm a huge Yankees fan, but there are Red Sox who I respect in the sense that I would like to have them come to the Yankees. The top of that list is Wakefield. I would take him on the Yankees any day. Some of the Red Sox and former Red Sox seem to be pretty good guys. Ortiz, Millar, Damon. I gained a lot of respect for Francona after hearing the things he said about Torre when the beloved Torre left his team.
But then there are guys like Pedro who threw at Karim Garcia's head, and threw 70 year old former Red Sox manager Don Zimmer to the ground. What a coward. Face facts, Schilling, Youkilis, and Papelbon are just awful people. I'm hopeful that Youkilis and Papelbon will learn some grace and dignity as they get older.
I'm happy for Doc Rivers (former Knicks guard) and Kevin Garnett. How much will it cost me for the Celtics to take Marbury?
Superbowl XLII - Giants 24 Patriots 3. Put it in the bank.
"But then there are guys like Pedro who threw at Karim Garcia's head."
Wait you mean the same Karim Garcia who assaulted an innocent Red Sox staffer, that Karim Garcia? The same Don Zimmer who charged Pedro (and by the way was one of the worst managers in Red Sox history)? What was he supposed to do hug Don? Give me a freakin break, look at least the Red Sox had the class to let some Yankees be at the all-century team ceremony at Fenway, too bad the Yankkes couldn't return the favor.
And what exactly makes Papelbon a BAD PERSON? He's a closer who wanted to close, calm down you clowns. He retracted it pretty quickly and if you read his comments in the full context they're not offensive at all. They certainly didn't justify your ilk threatening his pregnant wife, that's what I call cowardice. What makes Youkilis a BAD GUY? That Joba Chamberlain threw at his head? That he gets emotional when he makes a mistake? What makes Youkilis so different from Yankee Legend (TM) Paul O'Neill? What makes Schilling a BAD GUY? His political views? That he beat your team while injured? Look I'm a hard-core Democrat who has voted for Gore, Kerry, and plans to vote for Obama, but I don't consider Curt Schilling a BAD GUY because he has a different viewpoint than me. It's called democracy, he's allowed to vote for who he wants. And Schilling does a lot to help people with ALS (his favorite player of all time is Lou Gehrig).
Uncle Mike, Please, tell us more regarding your first hand knowledge of shrink visits
No, Yankee fan in NE, not EVERYONE would take the money and run... Mike Lowell, for example... another class act and a guy with integrity and a sense of loyalty to Boston and their fans. At game 4 of the World Series last year, after A-Hole "leaked" his big news, the cheers after the game were "Don't sign A-rod, resign Lowell"... and I'm sooooooo glad we did. Look what we've got, a solid, steady 3rd baseman and you've got Mr. Ego.
As far as Paps being booed, of course, all the Sox usually are when we go into that sewer you call a city... that wasn't his issue, yelling threats at a pregnant woman.... PLEASE????? Are you kidding me???? I don't even know how to respond to such reprehensible behavior... but should not be surprised, considering the source
Geez, what's your beef with Youkilis? Has he mouthed off like Paps and Schilling? He's just an intense guy who loves to play the game. And when he gets out of line on the bench, Manny gives him a few whacks. Seriously, Mr. NY Rock Guy cut the Youk Man some slack. Though I hear you on Papelbon. Also, he needs to get his split back.
The Red sox did have one Red Sox Hall of Famer present last night: Wade Boggs. Unfortunately, he showed his appreciation by wearing a Yankees cap, despite ever other Hall of Famer wearing the hat of the team in which they were inducted.
Why should the Skankee fans have rooted for the Red Sox? After all, the home team advantage isn't going to mean anything to them anyway.
I give props to Francona for treating all the Yankee players with respect throughout the game. Allowing them to each to get a nice hometown reception in the middle of the inninings was a classy thing to do, and it will be a fond memory for each of them when they look back on their playing days in the old stadium. Kudos.
It would have been nice if the New York crowd had reciprocated and been cordial to one of Tito's guys, but really, did anyone expect them to?
Tickets to the 2008 All Star game? $1000
A watered down beer at the All Star game? $9.95
Souvineers at the All Star game? $125.50
Yankee fans at the 2008 All Star game? Classless!
I don't understand how sox fans who denigrate the entire city of New York with juvenile insults about women etc. can claim any kind of moral high ground when it comes to class. What's CLASSY about lowering yourself into the gutter with those who have insulted you? I am a lifelong Sox fan who lives in NYC. I also lived in Boston for 10 years. They are both great cities, and both have classless morons among their populations. Sox fans: we sound just like the worst of yankee fans when we revert to lame insults about the attractiveness of women etc. And just for the record, you're out of your mind if you think that New York City somehow lacks for beautiful women. It's packed to the gills with them.
I am sorry, I cannot let the Boggs thing go. Is there any way the Red Sox can request that the Hall of Fame remove the Red Sox cap from his plaque? He really should have been wearing a hat with a picture of himself.
I rarely comment on websites, but as a native upstate New Yorker and a life long Red Sox fan, I have to take issue about the idiotic comments about New Yorkers, New York State, etc. made by Dave, Marty and others. I have been to a number of Sox games and their fans can be as rude, classless and ignorant as any other teams beer-fueled fans. On the other hand many are good people. Don't idiotically lump everyone who lives in New York State with the pathetic ownership of the Yankees, or some drunk Yankee fans acting like lowlifes. Here in upstate NY we have many fans of both teams and for the most part get along together fine. And, all in all, Central NY is an awesome place to live and be a Red Sox fan. Long live Red Sox Nation, wherever you live!!
In response to......I rarely comment on websites, but as a native upstate New Yorker and a life long Red Sox fan, I have to take issue about the idiotic comments about New Yorkers, New York State, etc. made by Dave, Marty and others.......Hi Roger. You make a good point. The last time I went to Toronto, some idiot Sox fan sitting in the right field corner dropped his beer over the railing into and onto three people sitting below. It was an afternoon game and the guy was waisted by the 3rd inning. He tried to hide, but all the folks, Jays and Sox fans alike, pointed his dumb ass out. But let me tell you this. My family and I have been treated well up here by a lot of people, until they see my Sox Cap. All of a sudden it's an issue. Try getting service in the Watertown Home Depot. Not Happening. Try to getting a table at Longway's in Pamelia. Again, not happening. I don't have the time or the space to go into it all. I'll be eligible to retire in a couple years. And believe me, the last thing the Citizenry of the Empire state will see of me is my Fay, Hairy, White ass as I cross the state line. Regards...
New York use to count. They use to mean something. They use to be a threat, now they are just the New 'Atlanta Brave's. 8 years of wasted effort. First round drop outs. They will never be the same after those four nights in October. four nights when they couldn't close the deal. Four nights in a row of wheeling out their so called superstars.
Mariano won a World Series share as far as I am concerned that in 2004. New York has never been the same. Oh those four nights will haunt that franchise forever. To get totally humiliated on their own turf (Ruth's House) they only had to win one. One game. One out of four.
26 rings - there isn't a single Yankee player saying that. You think 26 rings means
anything to the players on that team? Think those 8 time losers yell out 26 rings? Ha!
Now a days if you want to see a Yankee champion you have to go to old timers day!
Love the comment that Boggs should be wearing a cap with his own face on it. That just about sums that guy up. When he was with the Sox batting .360 he was hard not to root for but he was the most selfish player I've ever seen. His kissing up to NY fans by wearing the wrong hat at the All-Star game was just more of the same.
Well, Chad, it's official--you've hit the big time......there are way too many comments after your posts now (and infinitely more annoying ones.) No way around it, though, I guess.
I've got to say, as a lifelong Red Sox fan/ Yankee Hater, I'm not sure that I wouldn'tve booed those overrated pinstripers had the All Star game been at friendly Fenway. The Rivary transcends all else. Go Sox. Yankees suck.
Didn't read all the comments, but am I the only one who noticed on Tuesday night and other times in front of a camera where Barry Bonds gets his arrogant attitude problem? His godfather! Willie Mays may have been a GREAT ballplayer, but he's kind of a jerk.
Anybody who truly believes this All Star pregame ceremony transcended 99's is a complete idiot. You are gonna tell me that wheeling the Boss out on a golf cart(a pathetic attempt to recreate Teddy ballgames appearance) is even close? It was so transparent and the Boss is not looking very well, I actually felt sorry for him and was a little embarassed as well. He looks as if he suffered a stroke though there has been no public acknowledgment of that. As for Yankee's fans they are without a doubt the most self absorbed sore winners/whiners in the entire country. Anyone who believes one sentence printed in that rag the NY Post is a bigger fool than Wade Boggs classless snubbing of his Red Sox years.
Where was Johnny Bench? Otherwise it was quite a baseball bunch, I would say.
First ASG I've watched in 10+ years. Fell asleep in the 7th (8th or 9th?) but woke up to see the end...guess it was worth staying up until 1:30 as I was on vacation.
As a lifelong RedSox fan I couldn't believe what I was watching. Wade Boggs disgraced not only the RedSox and it's fans but baseball and the Hall of Fame. I just took my 4-year old son last month to Cooperstown and showed him Bogg's statue along with all the other great RedSox legends in the Hall. I say to myself, "Why was he even inducted as a RedSox player, if he cannot even show his true colors. The hell with the Yankee's and that Steroiduim they call the House that Ruth Built. Tear it down now I say. Its a dump.. Long live Fenway. Back to the All-Star game.. Where was Fisk and Yaz?? You mean to tell me Gary Carter was there and Not Fisk.. What a joke. 99 at Fenway was the best eva.. Go Sox.....
The debate about Boggs' choice of hats at the ASG reminded me of a similar debate that has been going on for years (up until about a year ago)--which hat will/should Clemens wear when he is inducted (I know, big assumption there).
Not many Red Sox fans making the argument in favor of a Red Sox cap anymore, are there???
Did you say inducted, or indicted?
