When the Red Sox finally won the World Series, it was news on all seven continents. The Red Sox are world champions. Sounds good, huh? Now we are deep in the somber reality of a tedious baseball offseason and we are also five days removed from a stunning reversal of fortune for the Patriots in Miami. But we must reembrace the Big Picture. We must remember that to be a Boston sports fan in 2004 is to be the most fortunate sports enthusiast on earth.

Storybook season
Who would have bet a schilling that this fairy tale would come true? That the Red Sox would make the greatest comeback in baseball history to overthrow the Evil Empire in the Bronx? That they would sweep a Cardinal club that won 105 games? That Johnny Pesky would get his champagne shampoo 58 years later in St. Louis? That Nomah would be dispatched to Chicago, that Pedro would decamp for Noo Yawk? Wikkid bzah, all of it, but none of it fiction. That ring is real. After 86 years, the curse is ovah, Babe. Hey, George, whos your Papi? -- John Powers
