The Freedom Trail
Evan Richman / Globe staff
Marked by a red line painted on the sidewalk, the Freedom Trail links 16 of Boston's most historic sites, including Paul Revere's house, Faneuil Hall, and the USS Constitution.
Approximately 3 miles long, the Freedom Trail lets you visit much of Boston's history at your own pace, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore on your own or stop in at shops or restaurants along the way.
Tour begins: Boston Common
Cost and hours: Free, open 24 hours/day
If you choose, you can also take a guided tour of a portion of the Freedom Trail; go to the visitor center at 15 State St.
