Tripping for art

Posted by Courtney Hollands April 3, 2008 10:54 AM

I'll always be a Granite State girl at heart. And I have to plug my home state whenever possible, obviously. You might be thinking to yourself: Since that rock face fell down (R.I.P. Old Man) and skiing season is over, why should I make the trip to New Hampshire? If not for the hiking and scenery, go for the food or the culture. Yes, I said culture.

Just over an hour from Boston is one of New England's art gems: The Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. It has a great permanent collection — think Picasso, Monet, and O'Keeffe, oh my! — and even offers tours of Frank Lloyd Wright's fabulous Zimmerman House. (I should know because all children in southern New Hampshire take school trips to the museum. Several trips.)

The museum reopened on March 30 after a 21-month expansion that added 33,000-sq. feet. To celebrate, admission is free until April 6. Why not make a weekend road trip out of it? If you're feeling adventurous, you could stop by my favorite restaurant in my hometown, Amherst, N.H.: The Black Forest Cafe. The chicken salad sandwich is delish. It's practically a crime to leave the bakery without an oversized chocolate-dipped peanut butter cookie.
