Get your gelato here...

Posted by June Wulff July 2, 2008 06:48 AM

I want to move to Italy. There, I've said it. So now I have to decide if my new home will be in Rome, Venice, the Amalfi Coast (Ravello, to be exact), Florence, or a tiny Tuscan town where I can stare at goats and grapes. My other decision is whether to buy a motor scooter. Nah, it will be too hard to drive and hold my gelato.

Back to reality. I'm staying put, but I'll pretend I'm in Italy when I eat gelato, lots of it (maybe 3 times a day like my hubby did when we were there last month). Want to join me? Come on, it's made from whole milk, not cream - it's almost a diet food!

Here are a few places to get you started:

GELATERIA (272 Hanover St., North End. 617-720-4243): about 50 flavors are made on the premises including chocolate, vanilla, pistachio, and tiramisu. $4.95 for 3 scoops.

CAFE PIAZZA DOLCE (831 Main St., Winchester. 781-838-6092): bacio ("kiss") is the most popular of the Naples-imported flavors (it's chocolate with hazelnuts). $4.50 for 3 scoops.

MIKE'S PASTRY (300 Hanover St., North End. 617-742-3050): 86-year-old Mike makes a lot of tiramisu, cappuccino, and mocha. $3 for a cup or cone.

LIL-N-CHICK'S (343 Main St., Saugus. 781-231-0380): try chocolate and coconut, two of their popular flavors. $5.75 for 3 scoops.

Mangi!

  1. There's also a place on Trapelo Road in Belmont, almost next door to the Studio Cinema.

  1. Whole Foods on Washington Street Newtonville also has gelato at their coffee bar; it's amazing! The passion mango fruit gelato has real fruits from the WF market right in there. Definitely a nice treat pre or post shopping trip!

  1. You have omitted the most amazing one! BonBon on Mass Ave (# 194A i think) is the best kept secret in Boston. Better than Mike's Pastry & co.
Not only are their gelatos sublime (yum cinamon toast crunch), but their Sorbettos are just divine..you should try the pear and the coconut..and the mango and the pomegranate and....
