The sounds of silence

[A silent rave in Union Square in NYC earlier this summer.]

When you hear the word "rave," certain images come to mind: thumping electro music, lasers that resemble light sabers, fog machines gone awry, and a lot of sweaty, sleep-deprived clubbers. (Well, I guess that makes sense — raves are typically all-night affairs.)

Throw your preconceptions about raves aside for the "Back to School Silent Rave," in Copley Square on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. According to the official Facebook page, a silent rave requires a set of headphones, a musical device (hello, iPod), and your own playlist. Then, you rock out to whatever sweet sounds come blaring into your ears simultaneously with others.

For someone whose musical taste isn't always edgy or hip — err, I won't divulge the number of Ace of Base records I own — this definitely has some appeal.

My advice? Leave the glow sticks at home.

Emily Sweeney is a lifelong Bostonian who goes out all over, from Irish pubs in Southie to the roller rink in Dorchester.

June Wulff really really loves musicals (can you say Chita Rivera), Italian food (squisito), and shopping bargains (guess how much I paid for this?).
Mary Ann Georgantopoulos loves everything French and is always down for a mid-week adventure in the city.
Dani Capalbo believes in a dance party as much as a book reading -- she just likes to go out.
