Bye Bye Abbey Lounge?

Lately there's been a lot of talk about the Abbey Lounge shutting its doors for good.

Whenever I hear about a venue closing, I harbor feelings of denial mixed with hope....and I think maybe, just maybe, there's a chance the place will stay open. ("Maybe the owners won the lottery! Maybe a generous investor swooped in at the last minute! Maybe this is all a bad dream!")

But those hopes were dashed for me when "Skinny Mike" Feaudale, the booking agent at the Abbey Lounge, e-mailed me today and confirmed my fears: yes, the Abbey Lounge is indeed closing.

Right now the final event listed on the Abbey’s website is on November 26 (“sadly, this is our last show,” it says). Dubbed "The Last Blast," the lineup includes The Acrobrats, Auto Interiors, Jay Allen, Coffin Lids, Curses, Konks, Muck and the Mires, Spitzz, Sprained Ankles, Tampoffs, and Triple Thick. Cover is $5.

  1. We're playing our last show there tonight (20th) and it's gonna be rough. I've been going to the abbey ever since i was legally allowed to.

  1. this sucks, but another spot will pop up, it happens all the time it seems, another spot is closed no more shows, then another opens, then closes.

  1. R.I.P. Abbey Lounge, always one of my favorite places both to perform & see shows at, in fact considered it the unofficial home to one of my bands - probably played there more than anywhere else the past four or five years.

Long live the Abbey , you will be missed by many

  1. Really? I live just down the street from the place. Whatever are the owners thinking of replacing this with? I see the old timers out in front all the time. They have been going there for years when it was just another dive in the neighborhood.

  1. *GASP* we performed our first gig there! Gee, some horrible Thanksgiving new this is! Well, I'm thankful to the Abbey for booking local music for so long (esp, for putting the right bands together), for being a fun place to hang out, for not ripping me off at the bar, and for those days when they'd stock the back room with lots of BEER for the musicians! We all heard this was coming but I think every one of us just wished it away. I hope there's people waiting to get in due to capacity on Wednesday and throughout the night.

If we knew for sure sooner maybe there could have been a "Save the Abbey-athon?"

Ewww does this mean we might have to play nice with the rather MEAN booking person from TT's to get a show in the Cambridge area? Hm, I think I'll pass.

  1. We played the abbey the other nite. The thing about the abbey that i love is that they gave any band a chance and there was always people there--from the older local ladies drinking bud bottles to kids playing their first gig---we did a benefit a while back for my friend who had leukemia--they were so great to us--and gave us all the money from the door. The abbey is a great dirty rock club and truly one of a kind---I do hope the abbey's karma comes back and someone swoops in with a giant check and saves the establishment. A girl can dream...

  1. Totally sad to hear this. It's been a while since i've been to the Abbey (since moving to JP--Somerville South) but I'll always think of it fondly. Red Chord...and Andrea Gillis singing "Try a Little Tenderness!"

  1. They had ruined a great bar by booking bands anyway. What next, music at Sligo?
