Get out: July 24-26
Why do we put up with endless months of winter, wool hats, and shoveling? For the few days a year we get to enjoy the city and its surrounds in the warm sunlight, of course. Make the most of it, folks.
Here are three fabulous outdoor events this weekend:
Friday
- "A League of Their Own" @ the Boston Harbor Hotel: This is one of our all-time favorite movies. Who didn't want to be a Rockford Peach after seeing Geena Davis slugging a home run in that oh-so-chic uniform? Eat dinner at the hotel's alfresco Seaport Grill, or park yourself on the stairs in front of the screen for this midsummer night's treat. And, remember, there's no crying in baseball. Free. 7:30 p.m.
Sunday
- Fitchburg Rollstones v Melrose Pondfielders @ Georges Island: Whenever I think of old-timey baseball, a certain Conan O'Brien sketch springs to mind (watch the video below). But don't take Conan's word for it, see some vintage baseball for yourself this weekend at Georges Island. Our money's on the Rollstones — and only because the team name sounds like a rock band we all like. A round-trip ferry ride out to the island costs $14. The games are free. Noon, 2 p.m.
- South Street Block Party in Jamaica Plain: We love the SOWA Open Market, but we're mixing it up this weekend. Vintage vendor Dame and several other shops on J.P.'s South Street — including Yesteryear, Petal + Leaf, Fiore's, and more — will offer refreshments and specials at this retail soirée. Mix in live music and art and you've made a shopping addict's whole weekend. Free. 12-4 p.m.
