Belt sander racing? Believe it. This sport of sorts is coming to the Somerville Armory Saturday (May 15). The New England Belt Sander Racing Association is behind the power tool races, which will benefit Community Servings.

Check out the Globe's story about the races, and watch a video of the association's 2007 Winter Nationals event to get a feel for it:

My husband and I actually stumbled upon belt sander racing at the Atlantic Brewing Company in Bar Harbor two falls ago. Sadly, all the tours and tastings were canceled for the day because of the annual event; however, we did get an education in the fine art of sander racing. We watched as people placed modified sanders on the long wooden track and whooped as the tools screeched toward the finish line. It felt very Maine:

You can register for the Somerville races before noon on Saturday; email the folks at the NEBSRA for advance registration. The competition is from 2-6 p.m. and the Chandler Travis Philharmonic goes on at 7 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10.

Vroom, vroom.
