Comedy night at The Burren in Somerville
Every Wednesday, local comic, essayist, and Boston Comedy Festival finalist Steve Macone hosts a comedy night at The Burren in Somerville. Full disclosure: Steve happens to be a friend of mine -- we met during a comedy writing class in college -- so I've caught the show a couple times in the past. It's an interesting blend of stand-up performers, ranging from those who are new to the scene and are just getting their feet wet, to more seasoned, veteran comics who stop in on a whim. (Eugene Mirman, Joe Wong, and even Marlon Wayans have been known to drop by.)
Most of the acts are booked ahead of time, with performers competing against each other for the affections of audience favorite in a fun, relaxed atmosphere that doesn't take itself too seriously. Case in point: last night there was a beer chugging contest, which pitted two audience members against resident bartender Dan Moy, the undefeated chugging champ.
Last night saw a mix of new comers as well as some Burren regulars. The always hilarious Kate Ghiloni, a regular on the Boston comedy scene, did a set, as well as Stow native Chris Fleming, whose hyper physical act poking fun at Earthy-crunchy yoga instructors had me in hysterics.
The highlight of last night's show though was Peabody native and Boston College grad Gary Gulman, who was a finalist on "Last Comic Standing" in seasons two and three. Shows are 10 p.m. Wednesdays in the back room of The Burren and are always free.
