The Boston Fisheries Foundation event, which aims to raise awareness about local and global issues facing the area fishing industry, features 20 vendors with fresh-from-the-water fare, a lobster bake, an oyster shucking competition, celebrity chef demos, and live music. Bring the kids, too -- the New England Aquarium Touch Tank is just one of the hands-on activities they can enjoy. The Boston Seafood Gala takes place the night before the festival and features culinary specialties by New England chefs.

Sept. 27, 6 p.m., Boston Seafood Gala at the Exchange Conference Center, Boston Fish Pier, Seaport District. $125. Sept. 28, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Boston Seafood Festival. $10 includes all activites, entertainment, and some food sampling; small plates menu available, see website. Bank of America Pavilion, 290 Northern Ave., Boston. www.bostonseafoodfestival.org
