In 2010, members of the Jamaica Plain community asked, "Cambridge has one; Somerville has one. Why don't we?" They were talking about a music festival, and now they do.

In keeping with the emphasis on community that has always characterized the Boston neighborhood, at least one member of each band performing at the event must live or work in JP. In addition to more than 20 musical acts on two stages, the kid/dog/bike-friendly fest features family activities, food trucks and carts, shade and water for dogs, and bike racks. Among the artists in this year's JP Music Festival line-up are Lowman (fronted by Greg Loughman), the Afro D All Starz, Merrie Amsterburg, Rick Berlin with the Nickel and Dime Band, Coyote Kolb, Allison Francis, The Grownup Noise, Lars Vegas, The Macrotones, and What Time Is It Mr. Fox? To whet your appetite, festival organizers have created a mix-tape of almost all the 2013 performers. Sept. 7, noon-7 p.m. Free. Pinebank Field, Jamaica Plain. www.jpmusicfestival.com
