What do you think of the new tunnel?

The new northbound Central Artery tunnel, which opened to traffic on Saturday night, is getting its first big test today as it handles the full onslaught of the weekday morning commute. Tell us about your experience driving through the tunnel. Could you find your way? How was traffic moving? Do you think the new highway will cut down on traffic jams downtown?   Complete Big Dig coverage

In 2 years it will be ruined by potholes that the state won't fix. They should of spent the money on all the poor roads in Mass.

It's better than what came before but the new tunnel does not look like a multibillion dollar project. There should have been four through lanes, not three. Now we have two thirds of an urban freeway system that would have been adequate for the time when it was planned, 20 years ago. We still haven't made up for Sargent's cancellation of highway projects and virtual theft of highway money for cost-ineffective transit projects. But the corruption and fraud of the Big Dig is going to make it hard to build the other major highways the Boston area needs. We need an upgraded Route 20 west of Boston, Route 16 through Somerville and Medford, and many more.

Sunday afternoon the new tunnel was just as slow and congested as the old elevated highway on a weekday afternoon. I fear the new highway isn't going to help downtown traffic one bit.

Considering the amount of traffic that exits 93 North at exit 20, no wonder people notice it "thins out" then. All of the traffic is diverted to a road of traffic lights and then bottlenecks at South Station. I've never experienced a worse commute. Open up the old exit 20!!!

PS to the person who wanted an air strike over the new tunnel - I wish you only peace and love for your obviously sad, lonely, and miserable life.

I wonder if all the people complaining about the traffice problems this morning are the same people who stop to look at an accident that occured on the opposite side of the roadway. Come on people, change takes a long time to get used to. Yes, the new tunnel is only 4 lanes wide, but two additional lanes are available for those idiots who don't know how to merge into traffic. Once people get used to the new traffic patters, I bet you will see a dramatic decrease in travel time from the south shore. Anybody think there may have been an accident in the early morning, say around 6 at the Mass Ave off ramp that caused the traffic problems this morning?

Todd, Dorechester

Driving from Morrissey Blvd. yesterday up 93N, I completely missed the new exit for 90 W and ended up stuck in a crammed tunnel underneath downtown Boston for 45 minutes! Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention to the signs, but I think it could have been a little clearer. I also think that cutting out the Causeway Street exit was not very practical. There were too few exits from the Pike to downtown.

I like the new tunnel for the most part, but was a bit surprised to learn that it's only 3 lanes when entering. I'm not convinced that having only 3 lanes is going to alleviate a whole lot of traffic. Seems like a lot of money to replace the old, without increasing the number of lanes. Loved the new Zakim/Bunker Hill bridge though!

no confusion - some people are just naturally slow. I liked it except for the bumber to bumber (because of the slow people)

They should merge this message board with the one on the liberal media bias. Face it folks, the big dig is a boondoggle to allow developers to build on the most valuable real estate in Boston. They even got the tax payers to foot the bill.....nice....
