Singapore style in Bangkok

Bangkok has always been a breeding ground for great hotels. So it's no surprise that Christina Ong, the Singaporean behind Como Hotels, has chosen the ascendant Thai capital for her Eastern debut.

The Metropolitan Bangkok is a striking yet understated place with 177 rooms and a quiet perch near the bustling Silom/Saladaeng area and tranquil Lumpini Park. Global trends shine through in the minimalism of the lobby and staff outfitted in all-black Yohji Yamamoto. But the sensuous warmth of Thailand is afoot as well. There are hill-tribe-woven rugs, teak flooring, and the emotive oils and triptychs of painter Natee Utarit. Amenities abound in the form of the Shambala Spa; an all-day cafe called Glow; Cyan, a Mediterranean-leaning eatery; and the swank Met Bar. For the Thai glitterati, their yardstick of sanuk -- the ''fun" quality they seek in all pursuits -- looks set to get not only a makeover, but a new address as well.

27 South Sathorn Road, Bangkok. Rooms $240-$300. 011-66-2625-3333; metropolitan.como.bz.
