Seeing Sarasota's sights on the cutting edge

And away they go: Visitors to Sarasota, Fla., can now see the city's sights on a Segway -- that sophisticated scooter created by New Hampshire entrepreneur Dean Kamen.

Florida Ever-Glides Inc. has begun offering two-hour tours on the electric-powered Segway Human Transporters for $59 a person, with no more than six customers per tour.

The guides share stories as their groups glide through areas such as the city's bayfront or Towels Court, an artists-in-residence neighborhood of renovated cottages from the 1920s and '30s. In all, six routes are available. Some Sarasota residents who have taken the tour say the unique device took them to places they never knew existed.

Wherever they go, riders get a good look because the Segway's top speed is 12 miles per hour. What's more, those riders are finding that they, too, are a Sarasota attraction as passersby swivel and stare at the people on those strange scooters.

Tours are at 9 a.m and 2 p.m. daily. Information: 941-363-9556 or www.floridaever-glides.com. Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau: 800-800-3906 or www.sarasotafl.org.
