Dog-sled terms

Email|Print| Text size + By Joseseph Monninger
Globe Correspondent / February 1, 2004

Gee, or gee-over -- move to the right.

Haw, or haw-over -- move to the left.

Whoa -- stop.

On-by -- ignore that distraction, don't take that turn, keep on.

Line them out -- hold the dogs out before the race.

Gangline -- the center line that runs up the middle of the team.

Neckline -- the lines that connect the dogs to the gangline.

Snow hook -- the silver anchor on the side or back of the sled; it can be "sunk" in the snow to stop the dogs.

Trail -- when you want to pass, you yell, "Trail!" and the other team must slow down and allow you to pass, except in the last half-mile of a race.

Sled bag -- the fabric bag in front of the driver, a mandatory piece of equipment. If a dog is hurt, it can rest in the bag while the team continues.
