WASHINGTON -- Hundreds of decorated Easter eggs from Eastern Europe will be on display through May 8 at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.
The tradition of decorating eggs for Easter with intricate designs is known as "egg-writing," and has become an art form in Eastern Europe. The display features "written" eggs from Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, and Poland.
Other Easter events at the center include a demonstration on making Mediterranean Easter breads, April 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (reservations required, 202-635-5434); blessing of Easter food baskets, April 10, at 11 a.m.; and Easter egg hunts on April 11 and 12, at 2 p.m. for children ages 7 and under, and at 2:30 p.m. for children 8 to 12.
Kite-designing sessions on April 11 and 12, from noon to 4 p.m., pay tribute to the Caribbean custom of flying kites at Easter.
The center, at 3900 Harewood Road NE in Washington, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation.
