Fishing equipment, like most sporting goods, varies greatly in quality and expense. For instance, spinning reels run from less than $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on size and quality.

To start saltwater fishing, expect to spend $200-$250 to get on the water with the capability of actually catching fish. While department stores such as Sears and Wal-Mart have plenty of lower-priced fishing gear, newer anglers are wise to go to a small shop with knowledgeable employees.
