What we liked mostThe placid surroundings, especially the refreshingly cool pond.
What we liked least: There was a reading light on only one side of our bed.
What surprised us: The international touches daubed around the house.
You know you're at the Pond House Inn when . . .Jackson the dog races past you to take a swan dive off the dock.
Rates: The Pond House has three rooms. Each is $150 per night (including breakfast), plus $10 if you bring your dog. Stay at least two nights and the rate includes dinner; for a one-night stay, there is an additional $25-per-person dinner charge, not including wine.
Directions: Brownsville is about 136 miles from Boston. Take Interstate 93 north to Concord, N.H. Pick up I-89 north to White River Junction, Vt., and I-91. Take I-91 south to exit 9 and follow signs into Windsor. At the second light, turn right onto Route 44 to West Windsor (Brownsville). At the Brownsville Store/Mobil gas station, continue 3.9 miles to Shattuck Hill Road. Follow Shattuck Hill Road (a dirt road) a quarter-mile to the white cape and large barn with the "Shattuck Hill Farm" sign on your left.
