What we liked most: Our warm, cozy fireplace in our warm, cozy room overlooking frozen Craftsbury Common.
What we liked least:The promised 3½ hours to get there from Boston. If you drive slower than 85 miles per hour, count on four.
What surprised us:The succulent, sophisticated dinner prepared and served by some of the best-natured people we've ever met.

You arrive the week before Christmas and see everyone dressed 1600s-style. Really.
Rates: $135 for a standard room with twin beds in off-season (mid-October through May) up to $259 in high season for a suite for four. Prices may increase $40 a room, and two-night minimums may be required for some dates.
Directions: From Boston take Interstate 93 north into New Hampshire and to I-91 in Vermont, then north to exit 26 (Orleans). Follow Route 58 west 4 miles to Route 14, then take Route 14 south 12 miles to North Craftsbury Road. Turn left and proceed 2 miles through Craftsbury Common, to just past Sterling College.
