28th Annual Great Green Mountain Pumpkin ShowNORTHFIELD, VT.Oct. 30-31Billy and Karen Moynihan of Ellie's Farm Market and Gift Shop thank their customers in more than a thousand ways every year, and they do it in two days. More than 1,000 lighted jack-o'-lanterns take over their grounds and surrounding woods. Some of the hand-carved orbs are done by students from the New England Culinary Institute. The show is free, but donations are given to a different charity each year. Grounds rounds begin after dark, rain or shine.

Aloha FestivalsHAWAIIAN ISLANDSThrough Oct. 15 On the mainland, we call it a block party, but in Hawaii it's called a Ho'olaule'a, and it's one of many events celebrating Hawaii's heritage and culture. Other activities include pageants, parades, concerts, and family festivities. The island of Molokai holds its symbolic Royal Court Investiture on Oct. 6, complete with chants and hula. A parade and block party are scheduled Oct. 8. On the same day, Maui celebrates with music, dance, games, feasts, and a Starlight Concert. The island of Oahu showcases its artisans on Oct. 15. A $5 ribbon provides admission to some events and discounts to participating restaurants and retailers.

9th International Istanbul Biennial ISTANBULThrough Oct. 30 Now this is an art fair. About 70 artists from 40 countries are participating in Istanbul's biennial event. This year's theme is the host city itself. Invited artists contribute multimedia works inspired by Istanbul's rich history and architecture. The seven exhibition venues are all within 15 minutes' walking distance of each other. An unlimited pass is approximately $30 while single-venue admission is $20. Guided tours are available.

Pirates Week CAYMAN ISLANDSOct. 28-Nov. 6If you plan to bring your pirate paraphernalia, you might have a tough time making it through airport security. It might be easier to purchase your hook, sword, boot tops, hats, and bangles on Shedden Road after you land. Pirates Week highlights include fireworks, a songfest, street dance with lots of Caribbean music, and a food festival Oct. 28. On Oct. 29, there's entertainment before the Landing Pageant when two old-time sailing vessels loaded with pirates invade George Town Harbor. A float parade, street dance, and food festival follow the invasion. Children's Fun Fair Day is Oct. 30. Don't miss the Trial of the Pirates and more fireworks on Nov. 5. Most events are free.
