' Jasper Johns: An Allegory of Painting, 1955-1965 '
National Gallery of Art WASHINGTON Through April 29
Jasper Johns emerged on the art scene at a crucial juncture: Abstract Expressionism had reached, or was just past, its peak, and Pop was about to emerge. His work would strongly influence not just Pop but minimalist, process, conceptual, and performance art. The National Gallery has assembled some 80 works from his first decade on the scene, focusing on a quartet of motifs: the target, the mechanical device, the naming of colors, and the imprint of the body.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art LOS ANGELES March 4-June 3
Pure, stripped-down, overwhelming: a landscape that could have been designed by a Modernist . That affinity is explored in this exhibition, the first major examination of the visual role played by the West in the emergence of Modernism as an artistic movement in the United States. The show includes some 110 paintings, watercolors, and photographs by such figures as Frederic Remington , Georgia O'Keeffe , Edward Weston , Thomas Hart Benton , Ansel Adams, and Jackson Pollock .
