Reykjavík Rite of Spring
REYKJAVÍK May 17-19 The temperatures don't always feel spring- like , but with the sun rising at 4 a.m. and setting at 11 p.m., there's no shortage of light to give the illusion of spring. Another trick employed by Icelanders wishing for spring is hosting a festival of artists from warmer climes. This year's Rite of Spring features Malian singer Oumou Sangare , a Scottish band called Salsa Celtica that mixes folk sounds with salsa, and Serbo-Croatian Goran Bregovic's curious gypsy-tinged melodies. Ticket prices have yet to be announced, but package deals will be available through Iceland Air. The Rite of Spring coincides with the city's massive Reykjavík Arts Festival (May 10- 26).riteofspring.is, 011-354-552-0380.
All Tomorrow's Parties
SOMERSET, England April 27-29 Unlike the mammoth events that fill stadiums throughout Europe all summer, this is an intimate festival curated by a single act (this edition by the Australian trio the Dirty Three), resulting in a show that aims for artistic consistency rather than big ticket sales. The Dirty Three edition of All Tomorrow's Parties (the name is lifted from the Velvet Underground song) features sets from Nick Cave, Spiritualized, Magnolia Electric Co. , Joanna Newsom, and Cat Power. The show takes place at a resort, so ticket prices include a pass to the festival and three nights ' accommodation with television programming also chosen by the Dirty Three.
