Prado Museum
New wing
MADRID From April 28

One of the world's great museums is becoming that much greater this month with the opening of a new wing designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo . Built of brick, granite, and wood, the structure cost $202 million and took five years to complete. It increases the Prado's space by more than 50 percent, adding 183,000 square feet to the museum. The expansion will, for example, allow the Prado to exhibit some 1,000 prints by Francisco Goya that had been in storage. Connected to the main building by underground walkways, the wing opens to the public with an exhibition devoted to 19th-century Spanish art.

National Gallery LONDON Through May 20
Pierre-Auguste Renoir's portraits, social scenes, and still lifes long ago made the Impressionist painter beloved. Yet he worked in other genres also, including landscape. This exhibition is the first show to examine his work in that field. Including some 70 canvases, it focuses on the landscapes he painted during the first two decades of his career, in locales ranging from Italy and North Africa to the south of France and Channel Islands . For those who can't make it to London this spring, the show will be at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from Oct. 4-Jan. 6.
