Grand Palais
PARIS through July 8
Large scale is one of the distinguishing features of the German artist Anselm Kiefer 's work, and the scale of Paris's Grand Palais is very large indeed -- even grand, you might say. This exhibition, which comprises more than a hundred paintings, as well as the installation of seven gallery-like "houses" and three concrete towers from Kiefer's estate in the south of France, inaugurates a series of annual one-artist exhibitions at the newly renovated Grand Palais. The series, known as Monumenta, will subsequently include such other maximalist masters as the sculptor Richard Serra and installation artist Christian Boltanski .

Tate Modern
LONDON through Sept. 9
"The best cinema," Salvador Dalí once said, "is the kind that can be perceived with your eyes closed." Dalí, one of the founding fathers of Surrealism, thrived on such paradoxes, and their centrality to his art helped make him one of the best known, and most notorious, artists of the last century. The movies were an important influence on his work, both directly (he collaborated with the directors Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock , and Vincente Minnelli) and as inspiration. The first of its kind, this exhibition comprises more than 100 works, including paintings, drawings, photographs, and, of course, films.

Founded in 1934 and less than an hour from London, Glyndebourne ranks with Aldeburgh and Edinburgh as one of Britain's premier summer arts festivals. Unlike them, it's solely devoted to opera -- or almost solely. A religious choral work, Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," is among the half-dozen presentations being mounted this summer. The other five are all operas: Verdi's "Macbeth," Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte," Rossini's "La Cenerentola," Britten's "The Turn of the Screw," and Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde."

"Cosi fan tutte" is also on the bill at the Santa Fe Opera. There are four other works being staged there this summer in the New Mexican desert. The most notable is the US premiere of Tan Dun's "Tea: A Mirror of Soul, " about an ill-fated romance between a Japanese monk and a Chinese princess. Also being mounted this summer are productions of Puccini's "La Boheme," Richard Strauss' "Daphne " (which had its US premiere at Santa Fe 43 years ago), and Rameau's "Platee. "

KASSEL, Germany through Sept. 23
Founded in 1955 and now held every fifth year, documenta has grown into one of the world's preeminent art fairs. This year's version is being held at four sites in Kassel and includes works from a wide range of genres and styles and many countries. Documenta 12 is organized around three fundamental questions : "Is modernity our antiquity?" "What is bare life?" and "What is to be done?" Such broad questions leave curators with considerable leeway, and that variousness is part of documenta's appeal. That appeal is broad-based: More than 650,000 people visited documenta 11.
