Dixieland spirit comes to Chatham

CHATHAM - Imagine a bit of Big Easy up North.

The only Cape Cod town with a First Night celebration, Chatham has big plans for this year's family-friendly New Year's Eve arts festival: to turn its downtown into a version of New Orleans - at least in spirit.

As in years past, the evening's entertainment will be presented by local artists and theater and music performers. But in keeping with the theme, Celebrating Mardi Gras, this year's event will be spiced up with a generous helping of Mardi Gras arts and mask-making, Cajun food, and Dixieland sounds.

Last year, organizers sold 6,000 adult and 1,500 children's buttons, and you can expect a big crowd again tomorrow for the 17th annual party.

There are dozens of events for families and their children, including Kids Art Studio in the elementary school cafeteria and a noise parade where masked marchers trek from the Methodist Church on Main Street (assemble at 6:30 p.m.) into town, all trying to outdo each other with their revelry.

You can also take in Cirque du Jour at Chatham High School or enjoy bluegrass, jazz, or folk music at several indoor venues. Bus service will be available to some locations. Restaurants will be offering bayou cuisine and Fat Tuesday cocktails.

First Night Chatham, Monday noon till the fireworks go off over Oyster Pond at midnight. 508-945-1122, firstnight chatham.com. Adults $15; children ages 3-11 $5.
