FORGET THE HOOPLA OVER PASSPORT RULES- FOR NOW
Like Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say: Never miiiiiind. Remember all the fuss and to-do about the rule that was supposed to take effect early this year requiring everyone who comes into the United States, 1) if by land or 2) if by sea, to have a passport? Congress has voted to delay it until 2009. You'll still need one if you fly in. And this isn't a total free ride. You'll still need two forms of paper ID: a government-issued one such as a driver's license, and a copy of your birth certificate. But you won't need to shell out the 100 bucks for a passport.

IT'S SNOWLIAGE TIME IN N.H.
Tourism officials of the New England states always make a big deal of our region's great fall foliage drives. But nobody talks about the great snow drives. The best routes are lined by a mixed forest where puffy snow sits lightly on the boughs of dark green conifers and clings to the twiggy skeletal forms of the same deciduous trees that provided so much color in the fall. The effect is most pronounced where the forest comes nearly to the road's edge and the asphalt twists to provide long curving panoramas. If you want to see what I mean, try the drive on New Hampshire's Route 101 from Milford to Peterborough. It just might be better after a January snowfall than it is in October.

ON THE FAIRWAYS OF FLORIDA
You have probably already grown tired of stepping up to an imaginary ball and waggling that new set of clubs that Santa left under the tree. We found a fairly inexpensive 3-day golf getaway that you might be able to swing, unless you went ridiculously overboard on holiday gifts. It's a getaway in the Orange Park area, about 30 miles south of Jacksonville. You can fly direct to Jacksonville from Boston for roughly $250 on
