Skive Beach Party
SKIVE, Denmark June 4-7 The fortunate thing about a music festival on a beach in Denmark, especially in early June, is that risk of sunburn is minimal given the amount of clothing required to stay warm. The Skive Beach Party, recommended for heartier beach-going types, such as those who find Maine beaches too hot, features sets from the Presidents of the United States of America, Linkin Park, and the pride of Denmark, the Raveonettes. Camping is available throughout the festival. A four-day pass is $146, day passes $105.

Rock im Park
NÜRNBURG, Germany June 6-8
Germany's largest summer festival, Rock im Park (Rock in the Park), takes a hard-rock, aggressive approach to the traditional summer outing with loud headliners such as Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, the Prodigy, and Bad Religion. Balancing those thrashing bands are more genteel sets from Kate Nash and Hot Chip. Tickets for the three-day festival are $212.

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival
MANCHESTER, Tenn. June 12-15 The Bonnaroo festival (the name is Cajun slang for "good time") still shows some vestiges of its early hippie roots - Umphrey's McGee, anyone? - but otherwise has matured quite well over the past six years. This year's gathering, which takes place on 700 acres outside of Nashville, includes music from Sigur Ros, Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Willie Nelson, Ladytron, and Death Cab for Cutie. There is also comedy from Chris Rock, David Cross, and Janeane Garofalo. Tickets for the four-day festival are $244.
Midnight Sun Film Festival
SODANKYLÄ, Finland June 11-15 About as far from a Hollywood film festival as geographically possible, the Midnight Sun Film Festival takes place north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun does not set through the run of the event. Films are shown 24 hours a day in four locations around town. This year's program has yet to be announced, but the attraction of attending is not only film, but the endless sunshine, and, naturally, the frequent parties. A 12-film pass is $94. Individual tickets vary by event.
Glastonbury Festival
GLASTONBURY, England June 27-29 The most massive of the summer music festivals, Glastonbury is a musical mudbath of communal living in the British countryside. The full roster of bands has yet to be announced, but confirmed headliners include Jay-Z, Neil Diamond, the Verve, Kate Nash, Leonard Cohen, and the Kings of Leon. Tickets for the 38-year-old festival, which attracts up to 150,000 music lovers a year, can be tricky to come by, but registration to buy is now open at the festival's website.
