THROUGH AUG. 31 NEW YORK "Philip Guston: Works on Paper": Guston has a unique place in 20th-century American art. A leading figure among the Abstract Expressionist school of painters, Guston (1913-80) returned to representational art in the final decade of his life. Although the change was controversial at the time, his late work has proved enormously influential. Throughout his career, Guston drew. "It is the bareness of drawing that I like," he once said. "The act of drawing is what locates, suggests, discovers." This exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum gathers some 100 examples of his draftsmanship, taken from the 1940s until the year of his death. 225 Madison Ave., 212-685-0008, themorgan.org.
