Things were hopping at Jack's Bar, which is pretty much the center of Maida, N.D. Wednesday night is all-you-can-eat fried chicken, served in the dining hall just through the door from the bar, where a cold Pabst costs a couple of dollars.

The chicken was fresh and filling, but outside it was deep-black dark and 15 degrees below zero. So a man in the next booth suggested going to nearby Langdon for more shelter from the still-young night.

"There's the Sportsman," he said. "That's kind of quiet. Probably the biggest hangout is Tom's Lounge, just further down main street."
