City folk enjoying the country for a day stood near the man tending a roaring fire and waited for a New England tradition: a hearty springtime breakfast topped with fresh maple syrup.

In the dining room, a nonstop woman all the younger staff called Mrs. Gould kept an eye on the growing guest list during this, the sixth generation of service at Gould's Maple Sugarhouse on the Mohawk Trail in Shelburne.

A hot plate of corn fritters and fresh sausage smothered in light amber syrup was just the ticket.

Mrs. Gould stopped by with an also sweet smile: "We're the original!"
